Title: Help locating a specific issue from picture?
Post by: Dowland on October 26, 2004, 08:54:58 AM
Hello :)

I was wondering if any of you could tell from which issue the following pic was extracted:

(At best, even an approximated estimate of which series we're dealing with would be helpful.)

Thanks a lot :)

Superman & Batman Magazine, issue #1, summer 1993.

The panel in question is from a 6 page origin of Superman story by Karl Kesel and Mike Parobeck.

It's a great story because they somehow manage to take the Byrne origin and twist and turn it until it's positive and optimistic.  The panel showing the Byrne-looking Krypton reads, "It began on the planet Krypton. A world of crystalline cities and scientific wonders" highlighting the positive aspects of the place.

I wrote a letter to DC saying how much I liked the fun and uplifting take on Superman, and got a reply back that they hoped to "do more with it."

Unfortunately, sales on the magazine weren't so great and it was cancelled after a few issues.  But I think this story turned into a proof-of-concept for the later "Superman Adventures" cartoon and comic book.

It's the same story this picture came from:

I guess, in retrospect, hopefully someone in the decision making area at DC realizes that John Byrne was a colossal error. It is nice to see Kal-El slowly inching back to the power levels of the Pre Crisis era.
