Nice point on Shaffenberger. He's definately one of the unsung heros of the Silver Age. I always thought he was plagued by simplistic inkers - and his stuff always looked (in the 70's and 80's) like an uncool retro. His Lois was really beautiful.
Speaking of those old timers knowing their stuff - since working on the KMetal project, boy - you don't appreciate how much those guys knew what they were doing until you try to emulate them. Shuster's studio stuff had so much more depth and craftmanship than I ever realized. You don't really see it often in the Archives because the inking reproduces blotchy. But when you see a live or 600dpi version - it is breath-taking.

I always thoughtKurt inked his own stuff especially if you see some of his work over at ACG where he did a lot of their covers under various pseudonyms until he started signing Schaffenberger (strangely enough ALSO started appeared in his DC mags).

Yes, his inking has a thickness and a slickness to it, especially in the 70s-80s. I used to be turned off by how "oily" his characters sometimes looked, especially Lois or especially when wet.
GCD usually credits Kurt with his own inks or a question mark.
A real pro!
