Title: Superman in the Fine Arts
Post by: Super Monkey on October 16, 2004, 11:38:29 AM
Far beyond just a mere comic book hero, Superman has be used for many different things , including fine art.

Andy Warhol did many Superman paintings and prints.

I will post my two favorites here:

There is a wax statue of Christopher Reeve as Superman in Madame Tussad's museum in London

I really wish the original artists, like Curt Swan would have been given a share of the money Warhol made off those.

And is it just me, or is that sixth one "Super-Elvis"?   8)

Curt Swan (and Murphy Anderson) should definitely have gotten the money for the second painting "Superman 1981", since the image is lifted directly from page two of Action Comics #430 (December 1973). That's just a classic Swanderson Superman.

Anyone agree that the Silver Age Superman "looked" better than the Byrned ersion did? And I am just not saying that due to the SA edition's vastly enhanced powers.

Thanks for reposting & showing other examples, Beppo, old bean.

My beef with AW is that he didnt interert as the others did - he  basically just  cut & paste and said, "Mine!"

BTW heres a link to Nightwing's detective work on the origin of that particular Warhol that Beppo likes (for those that dont thread hop?) by KURT SCHAFFENBERGER, the great Lois Lane and Superman family artist.
