(http://www.newsarama.com/DC/AS/VinSupes.jpg) A persistent rumor apparently grew legs and a cape yesterday evening, as a leaked solicitation for March’s issue of Wizard strongly suggested that Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely will team to tackle Superman sometime in 2005. The solicitation for the issue reads: WIZARD: THE COMICS MAGAZINE #162 WIZARD #162 IS OUR SUPER MEGA-COMICS SPECTACULAR! BETTER THAN ULTIMATE SUPERMAN FROM DC! Artist Frank Quitely (New X-Men) and writer Grant Morrison (JLA) join forces for their highest profile project to date. Hear from the new creative team that will take Superman to new heights in an exclusive Wizard Q&A interview. In an attempt to add some official note to the apparent confirmation of the rumor (as Wizard has advertised that “intentional disinformation” would be spread via the internet in regards to big DC announcements for 2005), Newsarama contacted DC Comics for comment, but a spokesperson for the publisher said they could not confirm that such a project is in the works. First up in these changes will be a shuffling of the creative teams on the titles, given the previously reported departure of Chuck Austen from Action comics as writer, as well as the conclusion of Brian Azzarello and Jim Lee’s twelve issue “For Tomorrow” storyline on Superman. Starting with what will be the Superman series with the least amount of creative team turnover, we spoke with Adventures of Superman writer Greg Rucka, who will remain on his title for the coming year. The change in Adventures comes though, as current series penciller Matthew Clark bows out with March’s issue #638, to be replaced by Karl (Majestic) Kerschl, beginning with issue #640. How many years does this make where we've been promised "big changes to the character" and fresh creative blood? And when has it ever amounted to anything that mattered, or lasted? We can't tell you what's going to happen, folks! Why not, because (1) we're making this up as we go along, and/or (2) if we told you, you wouldn't bother buying the books. Maybe they should just add a motto to the cover titles of all the super-books: "We Promise: Next Year, We'll Do Better!" All-Star Superman, the new line's Superman title, will be written by Morrison and pencilled by Quitely. Following Brian Azzarello and Jim Lee’s twelve-part “For Tomorrow” story (and an issue of Judd Winick and Ian Churchill’s Shazam story), Superman really gets back to Smallville. Literally. Following up on yesterday’s news of Adventures of Superman getting a new penciller in the person of Karl Kerscl in May, Superman gets a full creative team turnover, with Mark (Smallville) Verheiden coming on board as writer, with Ed (Birds of Prey) Benes joining the book as penciller. For Verheiden, the Superman run, which begins with May’s #217 marks a return to an ongoing comics gig in almost a decade. Don’t worry too much about his chops though, as alluded to above, Verheiden comes to Superman after working as a co-executive producer on the WB’s Smallville television series, telling the story of a young Clark Kent, growing up and coming to terms with his powers and his destiny. While writing Smallville squarely places him as someone qualified to handle Superman, his comic book credentials aren’t limited to the occasional story written for DC’s Smallville comic book tie in. The Bizarro Cube Earth invades our world in an epic 2-part adventure (no 'decompression' here!) and we're recasting the Bizarros as a frightening, unstoppable zombie-plague style menace. Bizarro Jor-El and the Bizarro JLA turn up in the second part of that story too. What else? We meet Earth's replacement Superman and Clark Kent takes on a new superhero identity...Ten of the 12 issues are complete short stories in 22 pages, so lots of stuff happens. And it all links together as a maxi-arc or whatever they call them these days, entitled 'The 12 Labors of Superman'. Superman's Rogues Gallery is pretty weak, so I've tried to add some characters I think might enhance the mix. Solaris, the Tyrant Sun from the DC 1 Million series gets a makeover and a return visit, and I figured Superman could use a 'Subhuman' counterpart, so I've created Krull, an evolved dinosaur dictator who rules a monstrous civilization at the center of the earth. He's only in the story for a few pages but the concept is strong and feels like one that could be used again. Then there's the Abominable Snowman, a tragic scientist who's a bit like a refrigerated Incredible Hulk and turns up for a couple of pages. Superman needs some good tough monsters to fight, so I've tried to think along those lines. In most cases, the villains only get walk-on roles in this one, however. Overall, the series is more about Superman's relationships with his friends and with the world than anything else. People know my stuff and I'm sure they can guess what to expect. It's going to be big, bold sci-fi Superman for 12 issues. Looks good. Real good. |
