Title: Whatever happened to Steve Lombard?
Post by: Kal-L on November 24, 2005, 06:30:41 AM
Whatever happened to Steve Lombard? Though unbearable with his stupid jokes, he was nice, I liked him, and I regret we don't see him anymore in the present DC mainstream Superman stories. Will he appear again one day?

Well, he seems to be appearing in All-Star Superman #1, sporting a rather 70s-looking moustache!

I noticed in that other thread interview with Morrison that Lombard was spelled 'Lumbar'.

It remains to be seen if that will be the actual spelling in the books or that was mispelled in the interview.

But I wonder if it's a suggestion that Steve was a 'pain in the back' in his very name.

My take:  The interviewer probably didn't know who Steve Lombard was (not being familiar with pre-1986 comics), and also didn't understand Grant Morrison's accent.  Could have been a phone interview.

:s:

Steve was a great character!
I loved the stories where he and Clark became friends, after he was fired by Morgan Edge (in SUPERMAN #384... Exactly 10 years after his debut).
I'm glad to know that he is back in ALL STAR SUPERMAN.

According to Dan Didio and John Byrne, Steve Lombard was _really_ the "jock" part of Superman forked off from the rest of him due to exposure to Red K in the distant past.  As part of post-Crisis, Steve Lombard's football wielding personality has been integrated into Clark Kent, ex-football star, as it should have been all along.

Tongue, meet cheek...

Has anyone read the remake of Steve's first appearance released last year in DC COMICS PRESENTS: SUPERMAN?
Very nice story.

In the Post-Crisis Universe, Lombard was some sort of TV show host of the same caliber as Geraldo Rivera.  He worked for WGBS, the main competitor of W-LEX, Luthor's own TV station.

I thought he worked as an announcer for Monday Night Football, then married Kathie Lee Gifford and gradually faded away.

Or was that some other broken down jock?
