Title: Vintage Superman Wallpaper
Post by: kcarm on January 24, 2007, 10:47:12 AM
Hello,

I am currently a graduate student in the history of decorative arts in new york.  I am working on a project where we need to find an example of 1970s (?) superman wallpaper--it is a specific kind, black and white, meant to be colored in.  we know it exsists because we saw it on ebay awhile ago and got out bid!  we need it for an exhibition on interactive children's wallpaper.  Any clues to tracking this item down would be much appreciated!

Is the image still on ebay?

no, it was on there a long time ago, and we didn't get the seller's name!  I've found out that it is dated 1966, not 1970s, like i thought...

Can't say I've seen this item, but keep in mind that a lot of Superman merchandise, like Batman merchandise, displays a copyright of 1966 even if it was made at a later date.

This seems to go back to the Batman TV show, when the bat-merchandising bonanza really took off and DC seems to have filed for some sort of copyright renewal on both characters and related imagery.  As late as the late 70s, I was seeing the '66 copyright on Batman toys and gee-gaws.  And to this day, stuff shows up on eBay advertised as a 1966-produced item when it obviously is not.

Anyway, some effort was made to have Superman ride Batman's coattails with the 66 merchandising boom (he also had a cartoon on the air in '66, which may have factored into things), so he's in the same boat.
