Indeed it does. I love the small things, like the box having the same colors as Superman's costume.

This is a great issue.  So far the best Superman comic out on the market.

Surprisingly, despite the cover and the solicitation, Lois Lane, Superwoman doesn't really use her powers all that much.  (really it's mostly about Lois and Superman dealing with overconfident strongmen Samson and Atlas) But it's still a lot of fun nonetheless.

The two other Daily Planet staffers with speaking roles from #1 are confirmed as Steve Lombard (well, actually, it was confirmed in the WIZARD article but they wrote the wrong last name down) and Cat Grant.

Sure enough, it's not the old Signal Watch--Jimmy's Super-Watch has a sleeker look to it.

Upcoming stories hinted:  As Samson says, Superman "completed 12 Super Challenges, the Stuff of Legend", some of which include creating life, escaping from the "Underverse", and overthrowing the Tyrant Sun (obviously a reference to Solaris the Tyrant Sun of DC 1 MILLION).

The two-page arm-wrestling sequence is my favorite of the entire issue, with the four pages afterward coming in close.  I think what helps make this book work is that Frank Quitely's art brings a quiet subtlety to the story; something that you hardly see in superhero comics.

So, Samson's paper had "SUPERMAN DEAD" on the front page.... but it's written by Clark Kent.  I wonder if it means that the Morrison/Quitely run is a finite story, allowing other writers and artists to work on their own thing, or it's open-ended, with Superman able to be brought back at any time.

Yes, that's definitely one super-kiss that would normally leave Lois breathless.

And did you like the little in-joke when the time-travelling Samson invited Lois to dinner -- on Triceratops Bourgignon?

That part of the story was a tip to the hat to  the classic Sliver Age tale "The Super-Rivals!" from action comics 279.

Klar,

Leave the Bizzaro talk to the Bizzaros....

Speaking of Bizarros, I loved the image of Bizarro in JUSTICE, which I, like many, regard as the "All-Star Justice League".  Ross' Bizarro is very creepy and spooky, and I felt genuinely sorry for Supes when Solomon Grundy, Parasite, and Metallo all ganged up on Supes.

It's nice to see some really good portrayals of Supes these day. Between All-Star, JUSTICE, and the OYL Clark Kent portrayal, they're ALL memorable in their different ways....

It's been a long time when I've so looked forward to new issues about Superman.---Al

This coming from a chap who spells 'thinker' with two 'n's.

What would Jacques Futrelle think?

Whew. Is it getting hot in here?

Seriously, that image is romantic and sexy (without being exploitive). It'd make a good poster.

A little difficult to imagine, since the author of "The Thinking Machine" mysteries has been dead since 1912, but I suspect he's still regretting taking that ocean voyage...

I have to admit that I was totally unaware of Jacques Futrelle until you two started talking about him. Thanks for turning me onto him! I've been enjoying some Thinking Machine stories online.

I'm wondering if Lois wakes up and remembers any of this.

Sorry, I'm late.

ALL STAR SUPERMAN #3 is simply the best comic book I have read in the first half of 2006.

It seems one of my father's comic books!

Folks, THIS is Superman.

That was going to be SuperThinker, but I accidently type two "N's" instead of one. What or who in Mr. Mxyzpltk's name is Jacques Futrelle?

Jacques Futrelle wrote the adventures of "The Thinking Machine" a brilliant detective with a computer mind.  Mr Futrelle sadly went down with the Titanic in 1912.

No. Im not making this up.
