Title: DC Comics Sales by the numbers

I'm not a doomsayer as the writer appears. Most of the OYL books are successful in boosting sales (even if only a few months). What do you think?

Since 2003, the quality of the material in Action and Superman has improved on a scale unprecedented, and sales on each title have doubled.  To me, that's good news.

The 1930s-style monthly comic book is doomed.  Long live the graphic novel!

That and webcomics, such as K Metal from Krypton and Superman and the Secret Planet

But most read things like Sluggy Freelance or other online comics.

The 1930s-style monthly comic book is doomed.

If you're right, it was greed (as opposed to the desire to supply a good product and make a good profit, which is not the same thing) that caused its doom.

How long can comics be sustained by core readers? The more I examine 2006's sales chart, the more I realize it really needs an influx of new readers. Some books are dropping like lead anchors. I don't know if it's price, gimmicks, creative talent, current market supply, or a combination but the industry needs to change tactics.

I believe that eventually online comics are going to be the way the publishers go.  They will have to feature their products for sale "online" and have readers download the comics.

Paying for on-line comics is like paying for MP3s or movie downloads.

Lame..

I do think that Graphic Novels and TPBs are where the future is at.

That is all I buy these days.

Sluggy Freeelance and some others have it right.

You can read the comics on-line, but you can BUY a printed book, so you can read off-line.

Megatokyo is like that too.  You can read the whole thing online, as well as the new installments - plus there are 4 graphic novel collections of the series.  Once enough installments build up, a new graphic novel comes out.

I bought them because I prefer reading books to reading off the computer.

Another similar but not-necessarily-always-online example is Twisted Toyfare. It's pretty popular, and hilarious.
