This is an excellent site that exposes many "facts" as simple urban legends. I recommend that everyone check it out. I would especially recommend the Science and Quotes sections.

Some well-known myths:

The Coriolis effect causes toilets to flush clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern.
