Title: Encyclopaedia Updates
Post by: Great Rao on February 07, 2005, 09:15:54 PM
I've added an Encyclopaedia entry for Professor Potter (http://superman.nu/a/Encyclopaedia/entries/?entry=potter).  The text is from The Great Superman Book, but there were no pictures for this entry.  Hopfully something will turn up eventually.

Also, does anyone feel like writing something up for the Future Superman of 2965?  Looks like Fleisher missed him completely.

I could do it but writing about one's self would make me seem a "piffle-diffle".  ;)

Here's a link to an entry at The Silver Age Legion of Super Heroes (who else to know the inner workings of the 30th Century?) and Im sure if your dropped them a line, they'd love to help.   Jo & Tinya rock! :D

Tell 'em ol' Klar (so daringly different!) sent ya.
The :s: 2965 link.

BTW I have part 1 of the Muto in AC and the WF teamup with Future bats (what's HIS motivation?) - intersting fare.

Thanks!

Of course, one of The Great Superman Book's failings is that it only covered the stories from Superman, Action, and World's Finest, and left out ones from Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, Superboy, and Adventure.  It also only covered up to 1967, if my absent-minded brain recalls correctly.

For instance, one of my appearances is online at the Jimmy Olsen Story Archive site, available here. (http://www.allaboutcomix.com/joindex2.html)  It is the "Jimmy Olsen Grows Up" story (Jimmy Olsen #47).

My first appearance was in Jimmy Olsen #22, in "The Super-Brain of Jimmy Olsen", in August 1957.  I believe my first cover appearance was Jimmy Olsen #33.  My last appearance was Superman No. 413 in November 1985.

Added an entry for Lexcorp (http://superman.nu/a/Encyclopaedia/entries/?entry=lexcorp) to the Encyclopaedia (http://superman.nu/a/Encyclopaedia/).

Actually Fleischer's book only goes up to 1964, so assuming DC stuck to their usual gimmick of setting things exactly a thousand years in the future, I think we can guess why the Superman of 2965 got missed!

Kind of a pain, really, as so many Weisinger era inventions were still to come in 1965 and beyond.  But not as irritating as having the Batman Encyclopedia also end in 1964...the very year when things started to get interesting!

TELLE - thanks!

ProfPotter, thanks very much for the info and for the links.  I managed to get a picture of you for your entry (http://superman.nu/a/Encyclopaedia/entries/?entry=potter) - and also added a picture to the Lexcorp entry (http://superman.nu/a/Encyclopaedia/entries/?entry=lexcorp) while I was at it.

It sounds like it's time for DC to publish expanded and updated editions - ones that include all of Fleisher's material, but add to it, bringing it all the way up to 1986.

Professor Potter's first appearance was in 1957 - after the George Reeves Adventures of Superman show.  So was Potter intended to be Professor Pepperwinkle, or was he just inspired by Pepperwinkle?  And were there any other versions of this Professor character besides Pepperwinkle, Potter, and Hamilton?

Regarding possible precursors to Lexcorp, I know that in the 2nd Kirk Alyn Superman serial (Atom Man vs. Superman), Luthor was the head of a corporation that handled the affairs of his television station.  The same station that hired Lois Lane as a TV newscaster.  I don't know if the actual name of his business was ever given, though.

It looks like this site is the only place such an updated edition will exist, given the current editorial and corporate emphasis at DC/Warner.

An encyclopedia of DC characters was published last year and it is horrible --inaccurate and based only on material generated for the most part since 1986 (and even here it is inconsistent).  Not to mention that the original took Fleisher 10 years of compiling.

Awhile back (like, 1996) I started taking notes after I read or re-read any post-64 Superman family title, with the idea of updating the encyclopedia.  I would suggest that users of this site do the same and submit the results to Rao --an open-source-style project to rival the Wikipedia.  As has been noted, none of the Superboy, Supergirl, Legion, Lois or Jimmy material was covered in the original edition.  We could overpower the post-Crisis world-view through sheer quantity of information available!

Any thoughts, Great Rao?

My first thought is that you are an absolute GENIUS.

I have many more thoughts, but they shouldn't take up space in this thread.  We should take it to the new topic area (http://superman.nu/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=22).

Just to close this "Encyclopaedia Updates" thread:

The bad news - there will be no more Encyclopaedia (http://superman.nu/a/Encyclopaedia/) Updates here at Superman Through the Ages!

The good news - that's because we're migrating it to Supermanica (http://superman.nu/wiki/index.php/Main_Page), where we hope that it will be expanded and updated through the assistance of a lot of people - maybe even yourself included! :)

There have already been quite a few updates there in the last couple of days alone, the latest ones can always be seen at Supermanica's "Recent changes (http://superman.nu/wiki/index.php/Special:Recentchanges)" page.
