Title: A true Supergirl prototype
Post by: darkmark90 on February 13, 2005, 06:48:20 PM
I just downloaded and read a scan of ACTION COMICS #156, featuring the Superman story, "The Girl of Steel".  You probably haven't read this one, since it hasn't been reprinted, and the entry in the Fleisher Encyclopedia won't do it justice.  What it amounts to is that a machine of Lex Luthor's gives Lois Lane super-powers similar to Superman's.  Thus, she dons a blonde wig and a skirted costume similar to the Man of Steel's and takes the secret i.d. of Superwoman.  Except for a pair of white gloves and a red "S" on the back of her cape, she's pretty much a visual duplicate for the Supergirl that came along in 1959.  Lois proves a bit klutzy when it comes to using her powers, but she still manages to help Superman capture Luthor.

You can bet that Mort Weisinger and company recalled this story when it came time to present Supergirl years later in 1959.  There was a non-powered "Supergirl" in an early issue of SUPERBOY, but Lois's Superwoman is a heck of a lot closer to the mark.

Are we talking about the same issue? (http://www.supermanhomepage.com/comics/pre-crisis-reviews/pre-crisis-mmrs-intro.php?topic=c-review-pc-sup123)

Cost me $300 but it's in outstanding shape.

Nope.  Yours is SUPERMAN #123, mine is ACTION COMICS #156.  Look for a cover scan on the Grand Comics Database page.

Not at liberty to say.  However, there are a couple of newsgroups that feature comics scans, so if you're on an ng system, you might check them out.  Thanks.
