A category is just like an article.  If you want to have an entry be in a new category, just do it.

Then click on the category link from your article, and type some text in the edit page so that it'll work.

The only tricky part is that once you've saved the new category, you have to log out and back in again in order for it to work for you, otherwise you'll keep getting sent back to the edit page.

You guys should really read the user's guide, it's all in there...

I did read it, I didn't find it anywhere.

How do you create just a new category without creating a new entry?

How do you delete a category?

I think categories only exist if an article claims to be a member of that category.  Maybe if you remove all references to it, it goes away?

How can a category exist if there are no articles in it?

Some that need to be deleted:

and

If anyone knows how knock yourselves out ;)

"Enties" and "People:" are listed as categories because there is some article somewhere that claims to be in those categories.

I removed them by finding the articles that had the typos.  Lucy Lane had a line that read [[Category:Enties]] and another article had [[Category:People:]].  Once these were both corrected, the categories disappeared.

I was musing over this as I was writing Mongul's entry. A great number of people and villains that Superman meets are extraterrestrial in origin. I suppose it's natural, since Big Blue himself is an alien. Maybe it might be good to have an "Aliens" category. This is a cue from The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe.

What d'you guys think?

If we have too many categories then it becomes useless. Since nearly everyone is an Alien, it's not really needed.

I think having an "Aliens" category is too Earth-centric a point of view.

Okay. Could someone delete it then?

How do you delete Subcategories?

Man the help section is useless. It only tells you how to add but not how to delete anything.

This looks like a job for...RAO!

Just remove all references to it and it should go away.  If not, let me know exactly which categories and/or subcategories need to be cleaned out and I'll look around.

Maybe the lesson here is to not go creating new categories at the drop of a hat?  :)

There is a warning against such things in the user's guide:

Quote
If you create a new page or edit an old one please add it to one or more matching categories to facilitate navigation. Please do not create new categories (especially not ones with only one entry) unless you are sure they really will be used. A good criterium may be if it fits well in the hierarchy below. Try to keep the number of categories on Meta-Wiki as low as possible - categories are useful only if people can remember which categories exist and what their purposes are. If you have to look into three almost equal categories to find the page you are looking for, something is wrong with the system. Categories without a description, with too few member pages or which are not listed here may be removed.
