Good news for fans of retro graphics and the Silver Age Superman:

Quote
Comic Book Category Winner
(BM)
Canadian cartoonist Darwyn Cooke was announced as the winner of the 2004 Reuben Award for comic books. The awards were handed out in a ceremony at the National Cartoonists Society gathering in Scottsdale, Ariz. on May 28. Cooke won for his comic book miniseries/graphic novel The New Frontier.

The Reubens are awarded annually by the NCS. The main award, Cartoonist of the Year, is a small statuette designed in 1954 by former Society president Rube Goldberg (1883-1970 --Goldberg won his own award in 1967 as well as winning a Pulitzer in 1948). Cooke's award takes a different form, as indicated by this description from the Reubens press release: "Cartoonists in various professional divisions were also honored with special plaques for excellence. These awards are voted on by a combination of the general membership (by secret ballot) and special juries overseen by various NCS Regional Chapters."

Cooke and his book have also been nominated for several other U.S. awards this year, including an Eisner and a Harvey Award.

Great cover, there are some rumors that DC might collect them both as a hardcover, though that rumor is just that and has not been cofirmed.

What a fantastic cover, and well-realized in its modern ability to reproduce color and shading and still portray characters without being steroidal impossible fan boy wish fullfillment... 8)

Was it the Kennedy speech that got you,  Klar Ken T5477?  I remember choking up as I read that, since it so appropriately described the Superhero Silver Age, as well as the confident optimism of the time.  And then I thought about what eventually happened to both the Silver Age and "Camelot"...

And did you like that conclusion?  I almost cheered when I saw old "You Know Who" and the heroes arriving.  I expected HIM to show up sometime in the book, but that final moment had perfect dramatic impact -- as "DC: The New Frontier" almost seamlessly merges into DC's Silver Age continuity.

If DC really intends to create a Multiverse post-Infintie Crisis, PLEASE let "DC: The New Frontier" be the official origin for the new "Earth-2".  You can't ask for a better "world-building" origin saga.

Yeah DTO it was the speech written by Ted Sorensen for JFK coupled with the imagery.

Here it is 45 years later and we're so much in need of a  Newer Frontier - in every way. It's sad how much we've lost and need to get back - in America and our heroes.

Well earned and well deserved. New Frontier was awesome. The scene that got me the most was actually the little scene with Robin, Batman and Superman. Those few pages wash the stink of Miller and those who have followed off in an instant.

Heck, the Afterword of the book alone is worthy of an award.

Another thing that impressed me about Darwyn Cooke was his distinctive art style -- a wonderful "retro" look reminiscent of Fifties/Sixties advertising art and "men's magazine" cartoons.  This was SO appropriate for "DC: the New Frontier", and you can enjoy more in Cooke's recent "Solo" issue.

He also contributed a story in the recent Green Lantern Secret Files and Origins, a "generations" tale about Hal Jordan's father sneaking the young kid onto an air base for his first jet flight, ending with Hal showing Kyle Rayner what "true" flying is like (leaving their power rings behind -- no "green parachutes" allowed).

If you want pure unapologetic DC superhero nostalgia without added sugar (John Henry's lynching in "DC: The New Frontier" vividly reminds us that the so-called "Silver Age" wasn't ALL shiny and bright), Darwyn Cooke is definitely the writer/artist to look for.  I'm looking forward to Cooke's next major project -- a new ongoing series featuring the legendary Will Eisner's famous character -- The Spirit!   See http://www.newsarama.com/SDCC05/DC/Spirit/cookespirit.html

It may be noted that Darwyn Cooke has also won the 2005 Eisner Award (Best Limited Series: "DC: The New Frontier") and the Harvey Awards for Best Artist and Best Continuing or Limited Series.  He also won the Shuster Award (named after Superman's co-creator) for Outstanding Canadian Comic Book Cartoonist.

Dave Stewart also won a Harvey for Best Colorist for "DC: The New Frontier", and a Best Coloring Eisner Award for a variety of DC and Marvel work, including "DC: The New Frontier".

"DC: The New Frontier" is already a classic, but who knows?  Maybe we can point back to this masterpiece as a pivotal moment, with the same lasting impact on DC Comics that Frank Miller's "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" had in introducing the "grim and gritty' Iron Age.  Personally, I hope Darwyn Cooke and others can lead DC fans back to a truly "Renewed Frontier".  We'll see what direction DC takes after the Infinite Crisis...
