Title: The Fate of Kandor's Metal-Eating Mole
Post by: JulianPerez on August 10, 2005, 09:11:36 AM
Whatever became of the metal-eating mole of Kandor that we see in Brainiac's introduction, "The Super-Duel in Space?" That's one loose end the story didn't tie up.

Because look at page 12, the panel with the metal cork. There's Superman breaking out to go do some Super-Things, and that shrunken mole is right next to him. The next page Superman goes to restore the shrunken cities and save the day. But we never return to see what became of the mole. Doctor Kim-Da could not have picked up that furry creature in his rocketship when he left Kandor, because bringing a metal eating mole onto a metal rocketship is pretty suicidal.

That poor hungry little guy could very well have eaten the cork and fallen down to Kandor; if so, his final fate would have been to become a yellow, furry stain to be cleaned up by Kandor's robot streetsweepers.

But maybe he didn't give into his appetites right away. What then, happened to him? This question would become even more interesting when you consider that the metal-eating mole, being from Krypton, would gain superpowers on exiting the bottle.

Perhaps the first action of the Superman Emergency Squad was to catch that metal eating mole and bring him back to the Kandorian Zoo before he gets into mischief or hurts himself. They could have caught him, and depending on how long these creatures live, he could have lived to have seen the day Kandor was enlarged on Rokyn.

But maybe that metal eating mole was forgotten entirely. After all, Superman had bigger fish to fry then: namely, restoring the Earth cities and taking care of Kandor. Perhaps in some future story, Brainiac is horrified by the failure of his electrical equipment only to discover there, the size of a flea, is that yellow furry metal eating mole turning his circuits into Swiss cheese. He tries to swat it, but that blasted little yellow flea has Heat-Vision...

I guess it's presumed that the mole ate all the way through the cork. If he did, he would have undergone the photonucleic effect once exiting the bottle, and Brainiac would have a super-mole to deal with.

He wouldn't really need to eat after that point, either...but I would guess tjhat he caused Brainiac at least a little more trouble...

He died after eating a piece of plastic, or something.

Maybe that's why Brainiac didn't stay in suspended animation for 100 years.

As you can see, Brainiac didn't have much trouble.  He ground the sucker up!
