This article about a new Mr. Monster collection has me excited about Halloween. Any other recommended Halloween comics? Title: Re: Halloween comics Post by: Super Monkey on October 23, 2005, 11:22:16 AM Art Adams' Creature Features
Godzilla may be King of Monsters, but Art Adams is the king of that giant lizard, and he proves it in this collection of Creature Features! Including such monster hits as Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Godzilla Color Special, a rare Monkeyman & O'Brien story titled "Trapped in the Lair of the Shrewmanoid," and "Trampling Tokyo" from the Alan Moore Songbook, Art Adams' Creature Features features all of your favorite creatures as seen through the eyes of one of your favorite comics artists! Though some of these stories originally appeared in black and white, every page of this 104-page collection is fully colored! I have it and it's great! :) Title: Re: Halloween comics Post by: Klar Ken T5477 on October 23, 2005, 12:40:33 PM The new Simpsons treehouse of Terror has an EC bent with art by Gene Colan, John Severin and Len Wein-Berni Wrightson reuniting on BART_THING!!!
Title: Re: Halloween comics Post by: TELLE on October 23, 2005, 10:02:25 PM I really used to like Art Adams. That Bob Burden-penned Gumby special was fun.

I liked both of them: the Summer Fun Special and the Winter Fun Special. Sean Connery as Santa was a hoot. :s: Title: Re: Halloween comics Post by: DoctorZero on October 28, 2005, 10:53:53 PM I really haven't enjoyed Halloween comics since they stopped doing the Rutland, Vermont stories in the Marvel and DC comics.
Title: Re: Halloween comics Post by: TELLE on October 29, 2005, 03:09:21 AM I've heard of this but never read any. Is tere a list somewhere? When did they stop? Why Rutland Vermont?
Title: Re: Halloween comics Post by: Klar Ken T5477 on October 29, 2005, 09:21:08 AM Rutland Vt used to have ab ig super hero themed Halloween parade. The best example of these stories was a Batman "Night of the Reaper" that featured characters such as Berni Wrightson and Alan Lee Weiss. By Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams.
Title: Re: Halloween comics Post by: JulianPerez on October 31, 2005, 01:17:58 AM Man, MONKEYMAN AND O'BRIEN! I haven't thought about that comic in years and years. I remember absolutely adoring it when it first came out. I'd give anything to reread it again.
Has it still held up over time? Is it available in Trade Paperback? Title: Re: Halloween comics Post by: Klar Ken T5477 on October 31, 2005, 06:42:46 AM Was just thinking about Orson Welles/Superman team up where Martains actually were invading...

It sure is available as a Trade Paperback. Since I have it and all. Title: Re: Halloween comics Post by: Gangbuster on October 31, 2005, 02:02:44 PM Well, there is the obvious one:
Batman: The Long Halloween It's by Jeph. You know Jeph. Title: Re: Halloween comics Post by: TELLE on November 01, 2005, 04:25:05 AM The always reliable Tom Spurgeon has posted a link to a rough guide to the Rutland Halloween comics:
http://www.dcuguide.com/who.php?name=rutlandhalloweenparade As well, Halloween comics are discussed here: http://canadiancomicsnews.blogspot.com/2005/10/little-monsters.html and here: http://www.time-cat.com/halloween.html Title: Re: Halloween comics Post by: DoctorZero on November 08, 2005, 09:50:06 PM As far as the Rutland stories were concerned, a Batman fan named Tom Fagan used to write Batman editor Julius Schwartz letters after each Halloween describing the Batman themed parades they had each Halloween in Rutland, Vermont. This inspired a number of writers to visit the town for the parade and then actually write stories involving their superheroes in the parades.
Both DC and Marvel featured stories about the Rutland Halloween parades. I'll see if I can compile a list of the stories, but I know they ran in books like Batman, Justice League, Thor, Avengers, The Defenders, Amazing Adventures (featuring the Beast), a Deadman/Phantom Stranger teamup (in a DC special) and the Freedom Fighters. |
