Title: Post IC Blue Beetle
Post by: Super Monkey on December 07, 2005, 05:44:35 PM
So how will the playful comedy character Blue Beetle look post IC?

http://www.newsarama.com/dcnew/Beetle/Beetle01_t.jpg

Whoever said that DC will use IC to make DC even darker might be right after all.

That's...pretty laughable.  :)  It's a good thing I'm not a Blue Beetle fan, or I might be highly upset.

He does resemble Rorshach from the Watchmen, though.

You said it. That's one of the most unintentionally funny things I've seen. Ooooh, Beetle, he's SO HARDCORE! What next?

No WAY that can be right. I mean, this HAS to be a parody, a joke, a comic book version of SPINAL TAP making fun of the pompousness and seriousness of comic books.

Sure seems like DC hates the Blue Beetle in all his incarnations.

Is it possible to get any darker than pitch-black? We're there already.

The Gore Age looks like it's just beginning to ramp up. We ain't seen nothing yet....  :(

Word has it that during the next crisis ten years from now, it will get even darker, where they will just print 22 100% black pages and 48 pages of ads, for a mere $9.95 each issue.

So Ted had to have his brains splattered before us to make way for Booberry Spawn?

Though with some tweaking, this wouldn't be a terrible henshin hero costume and you could use the scarab magic as a way to do that with a character called Blue Beetle. Just a random thought. But even if I were able to do that, I wouldn't have gored out Ted to make room for it.

I was looking back at the early issues of BB with Paris Cullins and some of the Steve Ditko stuff. The first thought I had was that if you could combine some the humor of Giffen with that great action stuff you'd have a really good Blue Beetle book. You just pullng back a little from FKATJ wihtout losing his smile and give him that dynamic hero vibe again.

What really sells this image are the "aroma" lines wafting up off the figure.

Apparently he's a "Dung Beetle."

At the mention of the Charles Atlas ads, I think I know what's really going wrong with the comics industry. Everything wrong with the comics industry can be summed up in one word:

Twinkies.

When's the last time you saw an ad for Hostess twinkies? Comics are too violent, too expensive, and too stupid because they are no longer being marketed to people who eat twinkies. Twinkie-eaters are young at heart, optimistic, noble and good. The only twinkie-worthy comic I've read recently was Banana Sunday.

Who can save Superman? Not Kurt Busiek! Hostess fruit pies, that's who!

If you really think comic readers don't eat plenty of Twinkies, you haven't been to the same conventions I have.

Besides, what about the "Twinkie Defense" used by that mass murderer?

More like the Chewbacca defense?

I think they eat more than just that and what the heck is that smell in comic book shops? It's not good... not good at all.

I can see a little of the Spawn resemblance, but the costume looks more based in the Japanese insect-themed henshin heroes.  In other words:

DC's answer to Kamen Rider

Like I said, you *could* do that with a character called Blue Beetle, using the scarab as a henshin device (which it basically is) but I doubt that is what DC is doing here and that any Kamen Rider resemblence is coincidence.

Comparing this armor to the armors worn by Sho Fukamachi, Oswald A. Lisker, and Agito Makashima.

It's another Guyver, but without the control medallion, sonic busters, heat vents, and sensors  ;)

I have never been a big Blue Beetle fan myself but this change seems way out of bounds.
I doubt the new, darker Blue Beetle will work.
