Title: "SUPERMAN DUELS THE FUTUREMEN!"
Post by: Great Rao on December 23, 2005, 12:54:38 PM
Many thanks to Richard Levins for scanning and sending in this latest story,

"SUPERMAN DUELS THE FUTUREMEN!" (http://superman.nu/tales4/futuremen/)

As Richard wrote in his email,
Quote from: "Richard Levins"
I have a copy of "Superman Duels the Futuremen", which as you probably know is often cited as the last appearance of the Golden Age Superman. Obviously a lot of the stories in the late fifties were sort of a blend of the Golden and Silver Age versions of the character. But this was the last book in which it was specifically stated that there was NO Superboy, and that Clark began his career as an adult. It was also the second (or third, or fourth, depending on your definitions) appearance of Red Kryptonite.

I agree, it is a great addition and one that I'd never read.

There are some fantastic concepts in this story, just begging for more detail.  For instance, Superman travels forward in time to the far-flung future of 2000 A.D. (beautfully drawn by Wayne Boring) and people there obviously know who he is - his great exploits are described in the history books and there is a museum devoted to him - but where is the Superman of 2000?  Did Superman die?  Leave the planet?  Retire to the old-folks home?  What eventually happened to him?

One answer that I know of that was given to this question was Elliot S! Maggin's explanation that Superman left Earth some time at the turn of the century - yet another great example of good writers respecting their characters and valuing the stories of their predecessors.

Good things cvome to those who wait.  I'm glad I'm alive to witness this "Golden Age" of Superman reprints, both on this site and from Warners/DC.

Excellent story, I love those "mystery" stories of the time...

Pretty fair summary of Mars without liquid water for the time, as well...

"Meanwhile, in the past, Perry White comes to a decision..." I love it when writers can't get their heads around time travel.

There's an odd fetish that keeps returning in Superman stories from this period: replacing a statue of yourself with your actual self. This happens to Superman in this story (Why on earth do Vard and Boka decide to stash him in the Superman Museum?), but in a similar twist, he pulls the same switcheroo on Lexor to evade the authorities. Also, Batman hides in the Fortress of Solitude by melting the wax figure of him and standing in its stead (this fools Superman, whose supersenses must have gone haywire). I'm sure it happens in other stories too. What does it mean?

I love the scene on page 11, with a powerless and wounded Superman holed up in a warehouse, surrounded by policemen, like some common gangster. Look at the fear and desperation on his face -- he's actually sweating. Wayne Boring could do some wonderfully dramatic moments.
