Post by: Doug Barr on April 01, 2006, 02:00:44 PM
Has anybody counted the songs about Superman that are out there?  let me list a few:

"Superman"  The Kinks,   a classic, 1979

"Superman" Greenday,    good song by a group from my hometown

"Superman Kryptonite"  3 Doors Down,  Love it, Powerfull!

"Its not easy being me" (Superman)    5 for fighting, Great, just as powerfull as above song

"Superman"   Matchbox 20, not my favotite-but thats me

"Superman"   Eminem, to round it out, its good too, Lois Lane might like it

I also have the Movie theme, many of the radio shows, & the theme to the 1950s TV show

I will bet more are on the way,as long as 'Smallville' stays on the air & I probably missed some.Let me know

The Spin Doctors (who played Grunge music or whatever the kids call it. Buncha punks, gimme Sinatra any day) did "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" and "Pocketful of Kryptonite". Can't remember how they went.

Don't forget Superman by Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians, it was on their Queen Elvis album and came out in 1987 or 1988.

Just thought I'd post post a link for the Spin Doctors' Jimmy Olsen's Blues, in case anyone didn't know it. I'm very proud of myself and feel very hip to know music that's only fourteen years old.

Oh, oh, oh, and while I'm at it, here's a link to The Ballad of Barry Allen, which someone took the time to make a video of using shots from the Justice League cartoon. What I like about this is that the front man of Jim's Big Ego is Jim Infantino, nephew of... yeah, you know who.

There were Superman songs on Sufjan Steven's Illinoise album...in fact, DC sued Superman off the cover of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois_%28album%29

It also goes without saying that if you enter Sufjan Steven's name into the YouTube engine, you will be infinitely rewarded. I haven't really had time to listen to any of the music yet, but the Wikipedia entry is very intriguing.

The more I think about it, the more I like Jimmy Olsen's Blues, with its odd suggestion that Jimmy has, well, the hots for Lois, and its rakish suggestion that he has "a pocketful of Kryptonite". Cough-cough.
