Title: Behind the Scenes: Pages 4 and 5
Post by: Great Rao on April 06, 2006, 12:17:32 AM
We've just added a "Behind the Scenes" (http://superman.nu/k-metal-from-krypton/behind_the_scenes/) section to the K-metal story;  with initial pages on the creation of page four (http://superman.nu/k-metal-from-krypton/behind_the_scenes/page4/) and the reconstruction of page five (http://superman.nu/k-metal-from-krypton/behind_the_scenes/page5/).

We'll be updating and extending these pages and adding new sections as well.

Very interesting, I have even more respect for the pencilling challenge when I see that the existing pages are going straight to re-inking and coloring, and that the "new" pages from scratch have to match them...cool to hear about things like the typical "3/4 view faces" too...

Actually, only a couple of the surviving pages are "going straight to re-inking and coloring."

In fact, when we were exploring how to restore page 5, Angel created full-size pencils for the page, based on the Shuster version.  Although we ultimately decided to have Bob re-ink the original page, Bob says that he did reference Angel's pencils when it came to filling in some of the missing details.

The restoration process of these ten pages really runs the gamut, depending on the quality of the source material.  But we do go out of our way to match the 1940 artwork as much as possible.

The original art for page 7, for instance, has been lost; but the page survives in the form of a very old, poor quality photograph.  Angel has used this photo as the basis for a completely new and fully pencilled page.

On the other extreme is page 20, where the owner of the original art has sent us a full-size photocopy.  In that case, Bob will basically touch it up and color it.

If people are interested, we might put more of this stuff online.

Yes, please do. It's like those extras on a DVD, it's great stuff.

Yeah, definitely, since its a combination of an historical story, using limited sources of different quality, and restoration, the whole gig is interesting...
