Superman's "S" to be Everywhere this Week

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the following announcement saying that you can expect the Superman "S" in many places this week:

The countdown to the Wednesday, June 28, opening of the Warner Bros. Pictures' release "Superman Returns" is underway. After almost a 20-year absence from the big screen, the return of the Man of Steel is being heralded from coast to coast and on land, sea and air.

Look! Up in the sky! Superman's iconic S-Shield -- accompanied by a countdown to the day when "Superman Returns" hits movie theatres nationwide -- will be projected on popular landmarks around the country. The S-Shield will appear at such recognizable sites as Niagara Falls; the Time Warner Center in New York City, where it will be clearly visible from Central Park and other parts of Manhattan; the Queen Mary in Southern California's Long Beach Harbor; the new Fantasy Tower of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas; Chicago's Sears Tower; and the giant Mall of America in Minneapolis. The S-Shield will also be seen in a variety of prominent locations in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Dallas, Denver, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Kansas City.

As befits the Super Hero who can leap tall buildings in a single bound, elite groups of skydivers will leap from airplanes in carefully synchronized jumps above major cities across the U.S. to celebrate the impending release of "Superman Returns." Look! Up in the sky! as skydivers simultaneously take to the air above Boston, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Phoenix and San Francisco on June 26th. In select cities, the skydiving teams will come together to form a human S-Shield as they float down to earth. In other cities, the skydivers will, together, be carrying huge S-Shield banners, which will be clearly visible from the ground.

Huh! Some of us have to waith until July 12th...

As much as I like Superman, that whole business with Niagara Falls is pretty unwelcome. When I see Niagara, I don't see YOUR AD HERE. Didn't Ray Bradbury write that the only reason there isn't a hot dog stand in the Parthenon is because it would be too out of the way?

Anyway, if they need the publicity, why don't they start beaming trailers into our dreams, like in FUTURAMA?

Though one thing I'm really excited about  with SUPERMAN RETURNS is the possibility that if the Superman movie does well, we might see a theme park ride somewhere! (I know there's a Superman roller coaster, but there's nothing particularly "Supermanish" about it except the paint job - perhaps something like a Superman ride, little rockets fleeing from Krypton's explosion or something like that? Maybe a boat trip through anamatronic animals that's the "Fortress of Solitude" interstellar zoo?

Also, isn't there a Superman theme park in Metropolis, IL?

One thing that has always captured my imagination is the idea that somewhere out there, there is an abandoned and rotting Li'l Abner theme park in the middle of nowhere. Money was placed into its construction, and it went under. Now that would make one hell of a Supervillain lair! Not to mention one surreal hiking trip.

Apparently Dogpatch used to be abandoned (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tips/getAttraction.php?offset=5&tip_AttractionNo==46), but was recently sold and the property has been cleaned up and renovated (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tips/getAttraction.php?offset=0&tip_AttractionNo==46), although it is unknown whether or not the L'il Abner connection was maintained.

I'd have to agree re: the tackiness of advertising at a natural landmark like Niagara Falls (though I've never been there before, not sure how much commercialism is already there, if any...).

Re: Metropolis IL: Don't believe there is one---one was planned in the 70's, but the gas crunch of the time plus its out of the way location made them abandon the idea.

Well we don't actually rent out ad space on the Falls. To date, we've only ever projected one image onto the Falls. About twenty five years ago. When Superman II was released.

Now that I think about it, someone with the Niagara Parks Commission must really be a die-hard Superman fan.
