Title: Theoretical Concepts
Post by: TELLE on October 09, 2006, 03:40:04 AM
One of the fun aspects of Supermanica that was not included in the Great Superman Book is the addition of the Category "Theoretical Concepts" which includes short articles on Earth-E, Imaginary Stories, Miracle Monday, the Multiverse, Parallel-Worlds, and Time Travel.

In general these are scientific (or science fictional) concepts that have been treated in an often contradictory manner in the comics.

I've been toying with the idea of adding a few more: Magic, Anti-Matter.  It would be great if some of the more scientifically inclined members here could try their hand at sketching out how these concepts have been used in the comics, especially if we can dig up specific examples (issue number, date, title).

I know that Superman must have used the phrase "alien dimension" or "another dimension" about a billion times but how are dimensions different from parrallel worlds?  So I've added the already-existing "dimensional realms" to Theoretical Concepts.

What do you all think?

Any other ideas?  Black Holes? Space Warps?

Magic is a clear "must have" choice, I could add stories were it is use, but I wouldn't know how to begin to explain it.

Do you remember the story in which a Roman sorcerer from Pompeii appears and mistakenly believes that Superman is a threat to humanity? In this story, Superman at one point feels weakened and thinks to himself: "There must be traces of Kryptonite... or magic... in the air", as if it were magic itself that is his Achilles' heel, not having it used against him.

Well I added a category and entry for magic.

For the entry I wrote a quick definition and then adopted the Fleisher entry from Superman's vulnerabilities. It was just a stub at the Superman entry so I thought I could continue the list of Superman's encounters with magic in the actual magic entry so as not to make the Superman entry too long --as was done with Kryptonite.

Also added the magic category to a few magic-related characters --unsure if I should add it to all gods or just earthly ones.
