I've seen pics of the action figures. Why in Gods name did they keep the darn mullet? That should have been the very first thing from the source to be tossed out.

Adam Baldwin as Superman
Anne Heche as Lois
James Marsters as Luthor

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  I'm wondering if Baldwin and Heche will be doing the New Frontiers Superman/Lois as well.

Here's what I don't get:

From what I've heard, the movie will NOT feature the four "alternate Supermen" (Cyborg, Eradicator, Superboy and Steel).  So what does that leave?  Superman and Doomsday beating the snot out of each other and both dying.

We've seen the figure in the black suit and mullet, so Superman must come back to life in third reel.  But to fight whom?  Mongul as in the original?  I haven't heard of his casting.  Luthor?  Yawn.

If this is "The Death of Superman" capped by the return of (mulleted) Superman, without "Reign of the Supermen" in the middle, then who the heck cares?  "Reign" was the only interesting part of that storyline and for my money the only vaguely interesting Superman storyline in the whole of the 90s.

I'll be saving my money this fall for the Batman 13-inch figure.

My hunch is that it'd be Doomsday again.  He comes back to life after they've beaten each other to "death", and the world needs Superman...

Y'know, Doomsday would've been more compelling if he -were- Mongul.

Yeah, I agree, the story is likely to be crap, but to me, Christ-like Superman is overdone.  "Superman has died.  Superman is risen.  Superman will come again."  Enough already.

I agree. I hate Christ imagery associated with Superman...it doesn't fit.

Oh well, at least we still have the wonderful "Steel" movie starring Shaqille O'Neil.

No one seems to mention Steel among Superman's cinematic legacy in documentaries... funny, that.

The reason why I am avoiding this DVD like the plague is because I really, really hated this storyline and Doomday is a terrible character.

Of course the people making this version have done lots of cool toons in the past but, the subject matter is just so lame.

Superman Doomsday Press Release

I hope this does well enough where we'll get to see other Superman related projects.

Don't forget. Following Superman Doomsday on tap for release are Teen Titans: the Judas Contract and Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier. Again, I really hope these do well enough where we'll see more DC animated tales from different eras.

Grruh... Brruh... Kill... Like you, I hated this. This is the best idea they could come up with for Superman's death? A slugfest? It was made doubly stupid by the fact that Superman was accompanied by all sorts of other heroes, none of whom figured out that you could actually pick Doomsday up (like if you had a POWER RING, SAY) and throw him into space. I may have said this before, but if they actually wanted to do a Death-of-Superman story, it would have been a lot cooler to have it done quietly in a back alley: tchoo! tchoo! two Kryptonite bullets from a silenced gun, and then Batman could have investigated.

It occurs to me that I'm a sort of armchair scriptwriter, or even backseat driver, when it comes to this sort of thing. I offer no apology.

Nono, you don't get it.  Doomsday is too strong, so that wouldn't work.  You can't throw him into space, you can't transport him to another dimension, you can't even put him in the Phantom Zone.  He's just too strong.  Got it?

Supes tried to put him in orbit and got a nasty side wound for his trouble. The creature wasn't just strong, it was also just as fast as Superman was. C'mon, the Byrned Supes wasn't exactly good at fighting those who were just as strong/fast as he was. He got his butt handed to him by an intoxicated Lobo and almost got choked to death by an inexperienced Lar Gand.

The Byrned Supes didn't have access to a Phantom Zone projector until the Loeb crew came onboard IIRC.

And the variation of the JL that accompanied him? They were a sad sack of incompotent lightweights.

As for a power ring, that might have worked if Guy Gardner wasn't a moron.

You're talking Iron Age writing teams.  The dead body shot with k-bullets would end up being a clone, while the real Superman was tied up elsewhere being a conflicted wimp.  Batman, the obvious gun-toting perpetrator, was acquitted of all charges because he's "the goddamn Batman".

Yes yes yes - more straight to DVD animated stuff from DC!  (That Marvel stuff is kinda sexy - it'd be nice to see DC break out some classic stuff - barring the death of Jason Todd that is).

Fine, I personally hated the Doomsday thing, but come on guys, Funeral for a Friend was the BEST Superman death story set I've read!  It was touching and absolutely lovely, and a good face slapper for those who thought Superman was irrelevant.  Some real gold in those stories.

Okay, I am a bit slow.  I just found the trailer today and am excited. I know that some of you think Doomsday is a lousy character, but I've always loved the story line! They obviously can't stick to the comics completely because... well, it's a 75 minute movie.  Maybe I have just suffered from too many years in Germany- a country that couldn't care much less about Superman- that I am jonzing for anything Supes! I am definately buying the DVD... ;D

Oddly enough, though, from what I understand, an associated video game is in production that will feature all those characters; if you play it as all four, you get a bonus level or the Victoria Cross or something.

Looks like there's going to be an early premier at Comic Con. It's safe to say Superman Doomsday is not a direct adaption of the comic run, i.e. Lex with a K-Gauntlet.

Uh no...that would be the "Not a dream - not a hoax but The Last Days of Superman"
by Edmond Hamilton and Curt Swan.  That still makes me cry.

Just finished to see, good movie and great animation, but one of the things that i like it most were the trophies on the Fortress of Solitude taken from the previous animated series like the robot from The Mechanical Monster or the Bulleteer car from the Fleischer series or the spaceship from TAS.

Saw it... don't know.  Can't get over the lines in his face.  Why did they bring those back? The only thing that is worse than the lines suggesting his cheekbones begin only an inch below his eye sockets, is the Jay Leno chin.

I do agree that the Doomsday fight was a bit disappointing! I somehow expected more.  Lois must have "super" vision to have seen exactly on which street the gun landed...

Did I misunderstand something, or did Superman grow his hair out in a little over a month?? How often does he go to the barber when he is not in a "coma-like state?"

All in all, I am glad I had someone ship it over to Europe for me... but that chin... ???

Still, I am happy.

He looks like a discoid lupus victim.  And yes, the chins seem off.

I just finally saw it today -- Netflix had it on "very long wait" until now.  I'm still absorbing how I feel about many aspects of it.

Some of the character redesigns I like.  Jimmy without a mullet has appeal.  Lois and Luthor are appealing.  Some of the character redesigns I don't.  Superman's too cheeky, and Ma Kent and Mercy Graves are all wrong.  The Toyman was a slim cross between the Simpsons comic-book guy and Tim Burton's Penguin -- not as creepy as S:TAS Toyman, but interesting.

The voices are interesting.   They're certainly not "better" than the initial S:TAS lineup --  someone has to do a lot to top Clancy Brown or Dana Delany -- but they're worthy follow-ups in a way that Powers Boothe and Lance Henriksen weren't.  I get the impression that the dialogue was just a little off...  there were a few Superman lines that were written without much thought to the idea that Adam Baldwin (or anyone else) would actually ever really speak them.

The story is so-so, but considering the source material (which is the subject of a very nice documentary on the DVD), it's not anything worse than that.  Dumbsday is his usual slugfest self.  The Lex Luthor stuff was good, but it would've been tighter if they had the Superman clone turn into Bizarro OR if they just ditched that whole idea and say that Doomsday lived through the first slug fest, owing to Luthor's attempts to weaponize him.  Heck, a fight with Superman taking a sun dip to recover and unexpectedly overboost his powers, then using his overcharged power and his head to take on a bunch of Luthor's out-of-control Doomsday clones and throw them into some black hole...  THAT could've rocked!
