Title: New Adventures of Superman (1966) to DVD?
Post by: nightwing on March 15, 2007, 11:24:45 AM
Looks like Filmation's "New Adventures of Superman" is coming to DVD this summer.  Any fans out there?

Similar plans in the works for the Batman show of a decade later.

I love 'em... they (along with Aquaman and Batman from Filmation) are amongst my first Saturday morning memories, along with the Monkees and American Bandstand!

I have the Superman "Super Powers" series VHS of some of the cartoons....

I loved them when they ran, though I hope that the very primitive animation and sound effects don't turn people off or make the cartoons mostly objects of sarcasm. Wonder if they will sell well?

GREAT!

A lot of the same people who made the comics at the time also worked on this show.

It was the truest version of Superman ever on TV.

It's only drawback was the extremely primitive animation.

Beppo, industry wags prefer the term 'limited animation'.  Its cost conscious frame crunching pioneered by Hanna Barbera.

That's the best news I've read all day. I began watching Filmation DC on youtube and followed with Boomerang bumpers. Just the other day, I received a bootDVD with complete DC episodes. Wow, what a slice of Silver Age heaven. Flash's intro gave me geeky goose pimples, excellent.

Do you think Superman will include Superboy episodes?

I really dig stories and animation from this era. I purchased Spider-Man '67 and recently pre-ordered Milton the Monster. While I love Coast-To-Coast or Adult Swim, I wouldn't mind seeing H&B DVDs of Space Ghost, Birdman, Herculoids, and Samson & Goliath or Marvel 60's superheroes. Thanks to the internet and Boomerang, I've gotten a chance to watch all of the above and found myself really enjoying them. I developed respect and admiration for these shows. One can only hope companies continue to release 60's DVD sets.  :)

IIRC, the Superboy segments were part of the Superman show (the way "Go-Go Gophers" were part of the Underdog show, for example), so hopefully yes.  I'm not really clear on the current legal state of the character, but I gather DC is able to reprint Superboy stories in books with titles other than "Superboy."  However, they seem unable or unwilling to print a "Superboy Archives" or a Superboy monthly.  So...title it "Superboy," no, title it something else, yes.  Kind of like "Shazam."

Anyway, following the same reasoning, it seems likely they could leave in the Superboy segments in a package that preserves the original configuration of the cartoon show.

As for the animation, it's not much more limited than the SuperFriends, and I think those sets have sold okay.  Plus Bud Collyer rules as the voice of Superman!

Apparently the Superboy cartoons are not included in the set, so I'm out.

It's in my Netflix queue.  It doesn't strike me as worth owning, but I may be persuaded otherwise after seeing them.  It's the same take I had with the live-action Saklind Superboy 1st season.

I'm a bit sad at not having the Superboy cartoons, but it's still a very fun set, and it's entirely possible we'll see the Superboy shorts with their own release once legal stuff is cleared up.

These were a lot of fun, and I really hope we get the rest of them.
