I think the perception here is what counts --it looks like the movie version and know-nothings like me think it is based on it. Certainly that is what John Byrne and the Smallville gang were thinking! Over decades, several writers and artists had described the planet little by little (and sometimes in great big lumps, like World of Krypton et al.), and then Byrne just came and said, "Nah, let's turn it into a dump."
