Well, it's a fun idea but I it's always kind of funny to read Eric Larsen saying some other cartoonist is crap.

It sounds like something you'd see in a fanzine --the whole thing is legal and subject to fair use, etc-- but these guys are talking about taking these ideas and basically ripping them off for profit.  No royalties to creator's estates.  I almost like the idea of a sincere 1963-style homage better.  But I also like Mike Allred, Steve Gerber, and a few of the others mentioned.

Well I like the fact that Erik doesn't filter his thoughts. There is never any need to read between the lines with him.

They are not ripping anyone off, since they are in public domain. They are not ripping off any characters, since it's the actual characters.

Alan Moore makes great use of public domain characters in his comics. Read more about public domain super heroes here:

Likely the amount of "profit" they'll be making from thse titles would barely be sufficient to justify the amount of effort put into it.

Much like rolling up your own change, I tried it once with pennies nickels dimes and barely made minimum wage, and this was MY OWN MONEY to start with !

It's a labor of love.

Don't they have machines that you can dump your change into?

I agree, a labor of love, they're not profiteering

Yes, they have machines that count it for you, Coinstar charges an 8.9 percent fee, but a lot of banks have ones at no charge for depositors. this incident was prior to their existence.

yes I understand public domain, copyright, and the need to protect it.  But I don't agree with it in the case where the creator at least is still living.  credit should be given and permission sought.  Copyright law says you don't own something you created just because you haven't made a new one lately.
