It was always interesting to see what Kirby did by himself.  But, IMO it seemed to always fall well short of what he seemed to be able to do in partnership with someone however.  I have the 1st and maybe second issue of Silver Star (I don't recall if it went on more than one issue) and a couple of Captain Victory's.  Definitely a bit fun and a good study of Kirby's work, but those stories were a bit hard on my head.

I think the best pure Kirby stuff is the introduction of the 4th world saga - there was really something going on there that was very palpable.  I think way too much for ultra-conservative DC at the time.  But he was rolling.

The part I feel the most for Kirby is that you kind of see that flame dying as time went on.  DC covering up his faces, going back on backing him up all the way - just crapola like that, and I think it impacted his work adversely as time went on.  He probably was the dream artist for anyone to work with simply because of how much Kirby was such a team player and self-sacrificing to a marked degree.  But ultimately, I think, to his detriment.

I would agree that his later work wasn't as good as things like the 4th World.

His Fourth World was probably his best work, it is a shame that DC didn't really back him up and give him the support it needed.
