Title: Who the heck is Electro?
Post by: carmine on August 04, 2007, 08:31:01 PM
I recently saw the cover for Action Comics 286 (the jury of super enemies). It has Superman on trial and the jury is all his supervillians.
It has Luthor, Brainiac and the Legion of Supervillians, but also has some guy named Electro. (he seems to be a glowing skelton/radiator thing) I can't find any info on this guy and he has a (kind of) cool look. Has he ever appeared anywhere else???

That's what I said when I read that story, and the story offers no clues as he plays only a minor role.

here is the cover:

I think he first appeared in 1959 (I lost the book that had it in there), from the cover, it looked like he came from a race of electrical beings that were asking for Superman's help, but I don't know that they ever used him again.

I guess Toyman skipped jury duty that day and they had to go with electro.

I have that story!

It's part of Showcase Superman Vol.2.

That's the goofiest looking character since the Super-Teacher from Krypton.

Off to do some research for a Supermanica entry.

Weird, it turns out he is a creation of Luthor to lure Superman off of Earth and his second appearance is only in a red-k induced dream.

The greatest character that never was!

Still needs an entry ;)

I'll give it a shot, but since he wasn't called Electro in the first comic, and you have the story, look it over.

Its very odd that he was made into villain in the second tale, even if only in a dream.

Just another Luthor creation?  Too bad -- I had wondered if Electro was distantly related to this guy:

A strange set of circumstances, the electric being is not real in the first story (Binder (?) written and a re-tread of an earlier story), a Luthor creation.

The second story is pretty good (Siegel) and the being is only on the jury in a Superman nightmare.  I wonder if the artist (Mooney) just saw the original story, though the thing looked cool and gave it the name Electro?

Grant Morrison obviously remembered those stories since he had Quintum communicating with a skeletal, otherdimensional race called the "electrokind" in ALL-STAR SUPERMAN...

Electro was also a villain in the 1977 Batman animated series by Filmation.  He was some sort of alien (but looked more like a robot) in a flying saucer with a shrinking ray and mind control ray.  Batman and Robin escape from a corked bottle while shrunk.  Sound familiar?

Why would a guy in a flying saucer with a shrink ray call himself "Electro", of all things? Because his gadgets run on electricity?

Don't forget the Jimmy Olsen story with "Mysterio!" That's two Spider-Man villains whose namesakes are extremely obscure Superman characters....any others?

(Does anyone still use that old naming schtick of "insert word here"-o? It was ridiculously popular in the Silver Age. Kind of Like how all those HE-Man characters were "Something"-OR.)

Does anyone else remember the story about the society of villians and the rule for membership was that your name had to end in "O", and they got on Dr. Morrow's case because his name ended in "ow" ?

Can't recall the title this was in.

I guess this would qualify The Marx Brothers as supervillains?

In Superman Sunday Classics there is a race car driver named Pete Parker.
