Title: More on Superboy Ruling
Post by: TELLE on August 06, 2007, 09:00:36 PM
I haven't read any of this yet, but Tom Spurgeon links to a pair of articles about new developments in the Siegel vs Warners/DC Superboy case:

As much as I hate to say this, because of what it would mean for the Siegels, I hope DC gets the rights to the character back at least long enough to put out some Superboy collected editions. I always wanted to read some of the early Superboy stories (of course they could just do the humane thing and pay some of the royalties to the Siegels, but I doubt they would put out such an edition if they had to do that).

I wish both sides would come to some mutually beneficial agreement.

Of course, I will always want the creator to win.

Good, I firmly support DC on this matter.

I just hope some sort of ruling/settlement can happen so we can get a Superboy Showcase volume!

One of two things will happen:

1) The court will find that 'Smallville' is a Superboy show. Thus, all stories of Superman's early life will henceforth be legally considered Superboy stories. There will be no wiggle room for DC to demolish Superboy, ever again, and they will have to work out royalty agreements.

OR

2) The court will find that Superboy is derivative of Superman and DC will get the rights. We will then be in the same situation that we were last year, relying on DC to make sure that Superboy stories get out there.

Personally, I prefer #1. Superboy is my favorite part of the Super-mythos.

I agree. I even grew to kind of like Kon-El, though it took a while. I think Superboy's fun adventures in an idyllic Smallville explain so much about WHY Superman is the character he is.
