Title: searching for "lost decade" thread
Post by: India Ink on September 04, 2007, 11:10:08 AM
I'm trying to find the the "Lost Decade" thread I posted here back in 2003 (I think). I know it's a stretch, but I was able to search my posts back nine pages to 2003, so it's possible this thread still exists on this forum.

Bob Hughes has started a thread on the DCMBs about that period (what he calls Superman's "Atomic Age") and I wanted to find my posts on the "Lost Decade" which attempted to list all the available reprints (of Superman and Family) at that time.  I'm not sure what title I gave the topic, but probably "Lost Decade" was part of the title.

I only found a reference to it here:

When the forum changed over to the new software, some threads were lost. I think Rao once explained why that happened, some of the other old ones are still around.

You might have some luck at archive.org, but you'd have to go through and lookup each URL one at a time.

A google search turned this up:

"SUPERMAN: The Lost Decade 1948-1958," by India Ink

This is a list of reprints for Superman's lost decade.

What do I mean by lost decade? Is that like a lost weekend? Did Superman go on a bender for ten years before he got the super-monkey off his back?

Well...no. And the decade isn't lost. The amount of reprints shows it's been in re-runs a fair bit. But this is the Superman who doesn't fit into anyone's neat idea of what Superman was or should be. He's not the Siegel and Shuster creation--these are all stories published after their departure and after their names were removed from the splash pages. And he's not that grand mythic figure of the Mort Weisinger era. This is before Supergirl, the bottle city of Kandor, Tales of the Bizarro World, Van-Zee and Sylvia.

And as such, these are the reprints most likely to be overlooked. Thus my "lost decade" reference. And a ten year gap it is--Siegel and Shuster are gone by 1948 and the Weisinger revitalization doesn't begin in earnest until 1958. But the ghosts of Jerry and Joe remain in every panel, and Mort's ideas are slowly bubbling to the surface.

Other than a mere fanciful list of reprints, there's a more practical purpose here. Things that have been reprinted before are more likely to be reprinted again--as previous reprints provide another copy, besides the often rare originals, for the publishers to use in preparing new reprint collections- which is why I've included all English language versions that I can track down. Hopefully the publishers have an even better list than mine.

This list--thusfar--is indebted to SM Rubin, the Grand Comics Database, Mike's Amazing World of DC Comics, and other message board posters such as Aldous, Lee Semmens, and Osgood Peabody. I could never have compiled this list without all the information provided by these sources. And thanks to "Gormuu" for all his efforts in putting this list up on his site.

Well. since I did write that "lost decade" list (with the help of the webmaster) over on Masterworks, I knew it probably existed somewhere in cyberspace.  A more complete thread on the subject is held in the "Vault" over there...

http://p206.ezboard.com/Superman-quotThe-Lost-Decadequot-1948--58-reprints/fmarvelmasterworksfansitefrm6.showMessage?topicID=98.topic

...which is essentially the same thing I posted over here (with a few graphic changes), and it includes the rest of the Superman family. But I'm still hoping to find the old thread for this site.

The link I give on that thread, just takes me to the same wrong address as the archive links Great Rao gives above--maybe I'm just not navigating through the storms of cyberjunk properly.  But here's that old link for the record...

I probably also have some of the thread copied to an old floppy or cd--but I have to sort through lots of junk to find it.

Thanks for the assist. I have a lot of pages to scan in the next few days. The search continues...

That's only the first page of the four pages in the thread, though.

Now that I have some info to work with (and I probably have the original data on discs somewhere), I'm thinking about reposting this thread (as I briefly mentioned to Great Rao). It shouldn't be too hard to bring most of the info up to date for North American releases, since Mike's Amazing World of DC Comics has a pretty good listing of reprints for DC domestic releases. As a sweeping resource that's one of the best places to look--my reprint list is more focused on a specific period and specific character, but I've tried to find every comic around the world that might have reprinted these stories--in English anyway--and the old reprint list could not have been done without the assistance of Lee Semmens, Aldous, Osgood Peabody and others. So in the next few months (if I can squeeze it in with all the other projects I'm juggling right now), I'll try to do a revised reprint list and post it on the forum somewhere.

I'm getting close to finishing the revised version of the list. If I find the time in the next few weeks I should have it done (well, up to the point where I can find no more data to add--although I'm sure there's more data to be found).

Just a few things I thought I'd ask.

I believe I've researched just about everything that can be found up to and including 2006 (with some surprises on things I missed the last time I did the list), but I'm a little vague on 2007 releases (or upcoming confirmed publications for 2008). So Showcase Presents Superman Family v.2 is out and Showcase Presents World's Finest v.1 is out--I don't have either of these, but I believe I can reconstruct the contents based on the information provided at the DC Comics website (the GCD doesn't have these contents yet)--were there other books that came out this past year that reprinted any Superman (& family) content from between 1947 and 1958?

When I do get the reprint list up to where I think it should be (correcting as many typos as I can, confirming publication dates, etc.), where should I post the darn thing? This time I think I'll post it in four parts, rather than all one post, so it will be easier to edit one section without editing the whole darn thing (a problem I remember from the last time).

I think the main thing I'm missing are the contents for Amazing Transformations of Jimmy Olsen. I might buy this book anyway in the next couple of weeks (although I have most of the stories, in one form or another)--but GCD doesn't have the contents up and the DC website doesn't list the stories.

I think that's the only other book I'm missing. Although there may be other foreign editions and the like. But I will trust that posters to provide more information once I put up the list.
