Title: Who would you marry?
Post by: TELLE on September 11, 2007, 05:11:39 AM
From Kitty Pryde to Jean Grey to Storm to Mary Jane Watson, comics fanboys have always had crushes on comic book heroines and leading ladies.  The disease even extends to writers and artists, with John Byrne's lust for She-Hulk perhaps the most famous.  Recently a few members here like Permanus and Klar have even confessed to super-crushes on some of our favourite super-females --hence this poll:

Imagining yourself a single young comic book character (and attracted to women), who would you choose to wed among those listed here --all recently discussed on this forum?

Songbird from THUNDERBOLTS. With the gorgeous two-tone hair and all that. She's had a sad life, so you just want to give her a cuddle. Anyway, you ever hate how a girl never shuts up about how great their ex was? Well, her dating history consists of the Beetle, that hippie Angar the Screamer, and Baron Zemo. INSTANT WIN!

How about Ms. Marvel? She's got that blonde shiksa thing going for her. I can imagine the love poetry I'd write. "Oh, my darling Carol. Of all the women I've met, you are by far the least like my Mother."

My response is tempered by the fact that if I married a supersexy female character, all the horny teenagers that love said character will hate me forever. Almost as much as I hate that evil, conniving usurper that stole Jennifer Gardner away in ALIAS. I'll get you one day, guy from ALIAS! Yes, I know you've got that (ahem) "administrative complaint" put on me, but I've learned to mentally estimate 100 yards!

In that spirit, I'd have to say Rogue, but not because I like her, but because I totally despise the idea of seeing Gambit "win."

Then again, I'd be the topic of lovey-dubby, perfume ad "shipfic" written by horrible fangirls, so no thanks.

Can I select as my answer Graviton's entire harem?

I'd like to select Squirrel Girl, because she's obviously in a physically awkward phase now, but I have a suspicion she's going to grow up to be smokin' HOT. Those buck teeth of hers make her look better, not worse, like Barbra Streisand's nose.

I don't read Thunderbolts, but I thought Songbird was that Black Canary rip-off who was romantically linked to Green Arrow rip-off Hawkeye. (hee hee, watch me wind up Uncle Julian, kids!  :D)

Anyway, I think you'll find that women who attract a long string of losers and abusers are usually head cases themselves.  On some level they seek out guys who'll mistreat them, and like it (as witness Lana Turner, for instance).

Out of the choices given, I'd have to go with Supergirl in the 70s, probably the first female to ever open my eyes to the virtues of females.  Nice curves, good hair, hot pants, a billowy blouse with a plunging "v" neckline and those cute little slippers.  What's not to love?  Plus she was a sweetie.  I liked her in the 60s, too, but come on, she was 14 years old...do I look like Jerry Lee Lewis?  (For you youngsters on the board, make that R. Kelley)

The trouble, of course, is that we're mere mortals, and historically they haven't fared well in marriages to super-females.  What ever happened to that touchy-feely New Age pansy Donna Troy married?

Saturn Girl is smokin' hot in her Cockrum-era swimsuit, but honestly what guy in his right mind would hook up with a babe who can read your thoughts?  Logically, Imra should be like Rogue...a gorgeous babe who's nonetheless shunned by males because of her powers.

Anyway, I think "who would you marry" is a question for 9-year-olds.  The average fanboy today is closer to 30, I'll wager, so the question should be "who would you bang"...with the unspoken follow-up "if she inexplicably lost her standards and/or vision."

And if that Mockingbird don't sing, Julian buys nightwing a diamond ring.

Amusingly, Black Canary is more like Mockingbird (not Songbird) now than she was in the '80s.  Perhaps she'll find her way into a refridgerator.

As far as the initial topic...  there's something about Mary...

Marry?????

What kind of guy fantasizes about marriage?

 ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

I kind of liked Linda with the wig and Smallville Lana from 1950s stories. I would have ran from Lyla Lerrol who I found rather cold and artificial (Marilyn Monroe hair).

I was out of comics by High School, so any "feelings" never got any deeper.

The 70s Supergirl, probably, but as said previously. who fantasizes about marriage?

And why is Jimmy on the list?   ???

Jimmy made a darn attractive girl when he cross-dressed.

I believe it was Permanus who said he wanted to marry the 80s Capt. Marvel.  The question, like a general enjoyment of Silver Age superhero comics, does require a sense of fun and maybe a bit of a 9-year-old sensibility, I'll admit.

"Who would you bang?"  That's so Wizard magazine --by which I mean, so adolescent.

And Jimmy is a great catch --whether from the 60s or 2000s.

Jimmy made a darn attractive girl when he cross-dressed.

Not if the story was drawn by Pete Costanza. :P

And hey can I change my vote?  Im tired and voted for Saturn Girl -- for cryng out loud she's a  a mentalist -- can you imagine? ::)

"Garth!  You're not going  out with Rokk, Tenz and Jo for one of your so-called patrols -- to a Durlan chameleo-club?!!"

'60s Supergirl - with wig and robot in a tree for me please! (Whether it's a Linda Lee robot or a Supergirl robot at any given point is purely irrelevant) ;)

As apparently the one non-heterosexual person here, guess I'll chime in with.... someone *besides* Jimmy (who I'm sure would make a fine catch... for Lucy Lane.).

I'd go with Ultra Boy (we'll assume gay marriage has long since been legalized across the board for centuries by the Legion's time and that he's at least 18), who I always thought was attractive looking (for a fictional cartoon character), esp. the way he was drawn in the 90's post-boot comics.

Really, it kind of depends on how any character is drawn IMO...even in the so-called characterization era.

Ultra Boy always had that fine head of thick wavy hair in the 60s.  And his costume is awesome.

I've already said 1980s Captain Marvel, haven't I? Can I have more than one wife?

Cause I'd probably take She-Hulk as my other wife. I know how that sounds. One black wife and one green one.

Was Cross-dressing Jimmy REALLY attractive, or was he just drawn that way?

And I don't think we're FANTASIZING about marriage here, but answering a legitimate question.

Having been married for 22 years and in the same relationship for 30, I would say the important thing is picking someone who you are able to get along with for an extended period of time, as well as being in love .

Physically, 70's Supergirl (who appeared it seems right as I hit puberty!) would be my immediate choice, but of the choices given, I'd have to go with Mary Marvel

Off list......Zatanna

The modern day Power Girl for her (ahem!) assets. Although I thought of this while reading the Generations series: if Supergirl (or in this case Power Girl) is indestructable, how would a normal man break her hyman? ???

Supergirl in her best form, the 70īs version! But the new Smallville actress is hot, too.

I don't know; it's not working out so well for this guy: http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/law/09/12/jeffs.walkup/index.html (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/law/09/12/jeffs.walkup/index.html)

Not at all. Some of my best friends are green.

For me, it wa a simple process of elimination:

Jimmy ain't my type, and I don't think I need to. uh, drag this out any further.

Dazzler and 70s Supergirl are hot, but there's entirely too much soap opera drama queen for my tastes.

60s Supergirl just seems too young and strange.

80s Captain Marvel never really interested me as a character until Nextwave.

Saturn Girl can read minds, and the person who could read my mind and would still want to marry me scares the bejeebers out of me.

And the fact that I would seriously use "bejeebers" in a sentence probably pegs me as a Mary Marvel fan, though we have to be talking about an adult  Mary Marvel of course.

I agree that Zatanna has a great costume but it would look good on just about anyone with the same "heroically proportioned" body type --and quite a few in the range on either side!  But what is Zatanna's personality like?  She's kind of a New Age daddy's girl, no?  Something of an exhibitionist/performer.  Just as likely to turn you into a swine as to engage in an even-tempered discussion.

Title: Re: Who would you marry?

I agree that the costume definitely WOULD look good on most any fit female, but I really was thinking more in terms of personality. as well.   Daddy's girl, as in spoiled? To my recollection I don't see her that way.
Newage, ala Penn Gillette's rhyme with Sewage?  Possibly, but since we're talking of a world where magic is "real" and not a pack of hooey, I can forgive that

She's always seemed rather pleasant, same like Mary Marvel (until recently in Countdown, of course, but that's the Eclipso talking)

and yes, an ADULT Mary, preferably closer to my age (48 next month), no more than 10 years younger

Umm... ME??  ??? ???

Voted for Saturn Girl, by the way. Maybe I could talk her into wearing that great seventies' costume just for me?
