Title: I'm a bit new to Superman
Post by: WelshSuperFan on September 30, 2007, 03:23:43 PM
as I was introduced to this site by SteveOlympia (a bodybuilder with aspirations to become Superman) so apolgies if I ask rather inane questions. I hope however that this does not class as one:

There's a good deal of speculation that Britain may have a federal election by the end of the year and I would like to know if Superman has ever been forced to stand for election to any office or been used by someone seeking political office to endorse their candidature?

Lately, it's mostly been about Superman trying to stop various bad guys from assuming elected office.  Lex Luthor was president in the comics just a few years back.  One of the few good/amusing 4th season Lois & Clark episodes had another baddie becoming president owing to mass mind control (taking over from Fred Willard, of all people).

Martha Kent is a state senator (a.k.a. an excuse to not show an older female actress) in Smallville, but there's not a "Superman" being exploited there.

Check out this classic tale, The Man Who Would Be President, written by a guy who later went on to run for public office (and is running for office today):

In the 50s/60s, he was "tight" with most figures of authority, notably JFK:

And probably his first political encounter was where he broke into the governor's place to save someone on death row.  But in that era, the politicians were probably more afraid of him than seeking his blessing.

A story about a bunch of special-interests installing a puppet in the White House?

Can't see it ever happening...

Has that Kennedy story been posted on the site yet? That looks like a good read!

You're not supposed to know the ending. So even if it is posted on the site (I haven't checked to find out), letting you know what story those panels are from would kill the surprise for you. And that would be terrible.

Adding it to the site is a good idea, but I don't have a copy of it.

It really makes me cringe, the way Superman is acting like such a suck-up in those panels.
