“MAN OF STEEL” REVEALED

Much-anticipated First Look at Star Henry Cavill as Superman

BURBANK, CA, August 4, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have provided the first look at the new “Man of Steel,” revealing star Henry Cavill as Superman in the film from director Zack Snyder.

The film also stars three-time Oscar® nominee Amy Adams (“The Fighter”) as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar® nominee Laurence Fishburne (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as her editor-in-chief, Perry White.  Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar® nominee Diane Lane (“Unfaithful”) and Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner (“Dances with Wolves”).

Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar® nominee Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”), and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue.  Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”).

Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.

“Man of Steel” is being produced by Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder.  The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer, from a story by Goyer and Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel (http://superman.nu/portal/Creators/siegelBio.php) & Joe Shuster (http://superman.nu/portal/Creators/shusterBio.php) and published by DC Comics.  Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

BMK already started a thread on this, but I'll repeat here that I like the image, overall, especially the "S."  On second look, though, that cape could be about a yard shorter and I'd be happier.

They seem to be following the theory of l'alternance de la boucle saliva (spit curl alternance): Kirk Alyn--spit curl; George Reeves--no spit curl; Christopher Reeve--spit curl; Dean Cain--no spit curl; Brandon Routh--spit curl; Henry Cavill--no spit curl.

He appears to have the spit-curl when walking around the set in-between takes...

Which would fit with how they did it with Dean Cain - backwards.  Clark had the curl and Superman didn't.

I do find it interesting that both the DCNU Superman (http://superman.nu/portal/History/2011_relaunch.php) and the new movie Superman have no red trunks.  There must have been some communication going on here with DC and WB.

No trunks for Batman, either.  Guess it's true what they say: Marvel's movie heroes beat the pants off all the DC guys.

Dang it. I was hoping for any villain but Zod.
I hope they at least call him "Dru-Zod" instead of just "Zod". It violates basic Kryptonian naming conventions!

Okay, so the truth is just that I was really hoping for Brainiac.

Not having too much trouble with the lack of trunks. I love them, but I really like consistency. Maybe this will keep them from just changing the costume back in six months and looking like fools at DC like they did with Wonder Woman's pants.

Hope his Clark is decent. Things like Superman/Clark differentiation can make or break a Superman movie.
It was the best part of the Reeve films.

I hope this isn't going to be another Superman origin film ... 

I don't like to criticise a movie this early, but enough already of the origin.  ::)

You never know, maybe they'll do something different.  Maybe Jor-El and Lara only appear as holographic flashbacks...  ;D

My preference would have been a sequel to the last movie, where Superman travels back in time to Krypton before it was destroyed and has an encounter with Brainiac--as well as Zod. That would tell the origin, without telling the origin, since it would be a part of the whole story. Then Superman is yanked back to Earth in the present, but time has been changed and Lois has never had a son. Kind of a reversal of Superman the Movie--Superman remembers the old timeline and feels the loss of his son who was never born.

Have to disagree with you there, India.  The one positive of this new film for me is the hope -- just a hope at this point -- that it will break from the Donnerverse once and for all.  I'm tired of the ugly Fortress, the campy con artist Luthor, even the Williams overture.  Since 1978, we've had five movies that were tied to each other yet somehow never managed a proper continuity, anyway.  Time to start fresh.

They painted themselves in a corner with that kid.  There's nothing you can do with him -- including erasing him -- and have it be satisfying. It was a big mistake.

But anyway my point was that a way to tell the origin without telling the origin is to do some kind of story that takes place on Krypton as part of the plot.

The Geoff Johns Brainiac story sort of did that--although I didn't like where that led to in the end. It would be interesting, for example, to tell a whole movie from the perspective of Brainiac.

The movie would start out on Colu and follow him to Krypton where he observes Krypton society and extracts Kandor from the planet for further observation--even as Dru-Zod, Jor-El, and Zor-El attempt to defeat his drones.

We then follow Brainiac further on in time as he studies the Earth. He becomes keenly interested in the Superman who defends this planet and Brainiac engages in closer observation, before launching an attack on Metropolis.

The origin gives people a chance to understand the storyline of superman who have never seen a superman film before. When I first watched the original when I was a kid, I had no idea superman was from another planet.I did'nt even knoew he was indestructible! :P The origin also gives a chance to expand on the family history between the house of El and zod. ;D

Supposedly, this is the synopsis for the movie which turned up online a couple of days ago...

"In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone's imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question - Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as "Superman," not only to shine as the world's last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves."

I like the way his costume is covered with big newsprint pixels.  Makes him look like he stepped out of  an old comic.   And at least his outfit isn't armor - the molding is shaped like a windblown, flowing fabric.

And I really like the fact that they kept the buckle oval-shaped.

So when this is projected onto a movie screen, Superman's package is going to be what? ten feet high?

Parents will be covering their children's impressionable eyes all across America. Would it kill the guy to show some humility and cover that up with a discreet piece of red cloth?

 ???First I thought this was gonna be good,  then I realized the costume wasn't the original, :'(, getting over it, I thought it could bee o.k, then henry cavill doesn't even wear the red belt or pants. And (ahem), he could be a bit more discreet around the baggage area. Tight outfits don't work that well there.I hope they don't make him like the new brooding, flightless superman.   :-\
