This is an illustrated biography of Kurt Schaffenberger (1920-2002), the preeminent artist for Lois Lane and Superman in the 1950s and '60s, and Capt. Marvel and the Marvel family in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He also is known for his unusual work for ACG, including the cult favorite, Herbie. Covers his youth and emigration to the U.S.; his entry into comics in 1940 at Fawcett; his time with DC; and more.
Inside are hundreds of never-before-published illustrations and photos--lots of covers, personal works, sketches and panels are here--all wonderful work by the man who brought a touch of humor and whimsy to superhero comics. Included is a selected (but still quite extensive) index of his comic works. Several industry giants are interviewed and talk about Schaffenberger's influence on the medium and on themselves, including Joe Kubert, Will Eisner, Carmine Infantino, Julius Schwartz, Murphy Anderson and Alex Ross. And a real treat--original Christmas cards beginning in 1942, all the way to the 1990s. Very cool! TwoMorrows, 2003.
SC, 8x11, 126 pages, text/b&w.
