Title: Superboy and The Legion of Super-Heroes
Post by: lastkryptonianhere on February 22, 2003, 05:33:16 PM
I always enjoyed the Silver Age Superboy best as a featured player in the Legion of Super-Heroes.  Especially during the 1970's.  One of the all time classic Legion stories Earthwar was during that era and to me that is when the Legion really rocked.

I never really paid much attention to the legion, but they looked cool.

The late sixties/early 70's Legion was my favorite too. While I still like the Legion, its not the same with the new names and with no Superboy.

There is no Legion without Superboy.

I grew up in the 70's literally on the Various DC titles and chief among them was Superboy and The Legion of Super-Heroes.  He appeared in nearly every story (unless it was a back up) but I too feel that the Legion of today isn't the same without Superboy.  However I do like the current version of the Legion on its own merits - one being the way DNA are using familiar DC continuity in their storylines.  It isn't the Silver Age Legion I grew up on but it is a good series.

check out the Legion archives that has the origins and lotsa cool sh*t, One thing I don't understand is why doesn't the Legion revere Superman when he's "superman"as much as they honor him more when he was "superboy".

good question the only thing I can figure is because the Legion were teens and looked to Superboy because he was their age.

AND the story always sets for superman to meet the "grown up" versions of the Legion while the writers always had the "teen legion" meet superboy..

If it was from the future..

HECK

Superman could also meet the "teen legions" and the Adult legions could also meet "superboy".

Maybe it's not so hard to explain, Rugal.

After all....

(I don't know how old you are, so bear with me)

....when you were 16 you wanted to hang out with teenagers, and when you were 25 you wanted to hang out with twentysomethings... and, if you're in your 40s, why would you want to have regular get-togethers with a bunch of 14-year-olds when their fortysomething versions are available?

For my 12 cents the silver ager LSH was the best - best writing from Siegel, Hamilton & Shooter and a great wedding of sci-fi and super-heroics.  Not to mention the underrated art work of John Forte and then Curt Swan.
The Swan-Jack Abel inked Mordru series is some of the best art I ever saw out of that DC era. :D

But then there's also Pete Costanza...and the less said about that the better.

That was always my opinion, too. Even just an occasional appearance by the Boy of Steel in the Legion's chronicles was enough to keep me happy. After all, according to the original idea, Superboy served as the inspiration for the entire organization. That being said, I'm really glad to see Kon-El finally take his rightful place in the current Legion ... and wearing the traditional "S" uniform, to boot! I can live with the Legion belt buckle on the costume, It distinguishes him from the Pre-Crisis version nicely.

I'm with you on that Trisaber. Yeah, it'd be nice if Clark could be in the Legion, but like it or lump it we have to respect what DC's done with the current continuity and work around it. Still, I do confess a certain amount of geeker satisfaction to see Superboy back in the Legion. The Titans are a way to take the character, but Superboy and the Legion just have more history. And I like the belt buckle thing too. Now if Cosmic Boy could just stop giving Kon grief, I could be happy. :D
