Title: My first Silver Age Supergirl comic Post by: comicfan on June 26, 2004, 09:45:21 PM Just picked up my first silver age Supergirl comic today- Adventure Comics #381. Pretty bad shape, but you can't expect too good condition from a 35 year old comic.
Anyway, it was a decent enough read- fluffy, but I didn't expect too much in terms of story. What I did get was a small taste of was how earnest and likeable a character Supergirl could be, which is pretty much why I bought it anyway. I liked how she just used her powers sparingly and only when necessary, and she didn't just beat up villans but really tried to solve the crime. Plus there was a nifty Batgirl cameo. I got that a LONG time ago (summer 1969) along with a handful of other comics when I was sick -- possibly with chicken pox. I still have that issue.
"The Supergirl Gang" was Supergirl's first solo story in Adventure Comics. It was a great read back then, and it's among Kara's better Adventure stories. The inclusion of Batgirl was a nice touch. They turned me into a diehard Supergirl fan. The Joe Orlando-edited ADVENTURE stories that followed his run were also pretty good. It's when they shunted her into her own book that the lame-o scripting returned, and she never totally recovered from that.
(Except--ahem!--when I'm writing fanfic about her. ;-)) |
