The real truth revealed in "Fathers!"

Hmm.  Looks like it was all just a bad dream...

It's clear that this issue originally was meant to be a restart but then DC started back pedaling like crazy since they must have feared that Superman might begin to be Superman again, and we can't have that now can we?

Or something like that Wink

Seriously, last time this happen was the infamous Sandman Saga from the 1970's, where DC just back pedaled and brought things back to normal again once the story ended.

Thanks for the new comic, Rao. You really have to wonder what might've been if DC hadn't gotten nervous and reverted back to the MOS origin.

Many people want others to accept their opinions as fact. If enough people accept them as fact then it gives the initial person or persons a feeling of power. This is why people will constantly talk about something they hate—they want others to feel the same way. It matters to them that others perceive things the same way that they do.

They reverted?

If I had my way I'd let the post crisis DCU be a fever dream hoax perpetuated by that imperious imp, Mxy.

And one day...Clark wakes up...and it's a Wesinger world, after all.

They never reverted, they just replaced this one with Birthright.

From what I can gather... following this story, Clark and Lois somehow managed to access this Krypton through the Phantom Zone, and meet Jor-El and Lara. Superman assists his father in helping to save the planet, while battling Zod, and just as Clark and Lois return home through the Phantom Zone... they are followed home by Krypto.  Smiley

Months later, Superman returns to this Krypton, only to discover it has been an illusion engineered by Braniac 13 all along.  :x (Thus, right up until 'Birthright', Bryne's Man of Steel origin is still the definite origin).

After reading "Fathers", I think the original idea of introducing this Pre-Crisis Krypton as the origin, without directly contridicting the current continuity, had a lot of potential. Loeb might have been better off doing a sort of mini-series, a la Bryne, instead of putting to into the midst of the on-going titles.

Clearly certain ideas had to be fleshed out better, (for instance, if Jor-El truly created the Bryne Krypton to be an illusion, how does that account for the Erradicator, Kelex, the Fortress etc. In fact, how would Jor-El have been able to create such a detailed illusion in such a short amount of time, if he thought the Science Council would have listened to him in the first place). But certainly addressing such flat-out contradictions would have lead to interesting stories, and then perhaps the revival of Pre-Crisis concepts. (Like Krypto as seen in the story, and maybe Supergirl).  Smiley

Thanks again for putting this great issue on the site Rao!

Ed McGuiness's take on the classical version of Krypton is the real treat of this thing.  They really should have gotten him for the big reboot because the man has a ton of talent and I think with this issue he more than proved that he's not all just big muscles and speedlines. For me, Lenil Yu is what just utterly kills Birthright.

Intresting thing, theres actually a Superman sticker book that we sell in the kids section of our store.  In it, all the images of Jor-El and Lara and Krypton itself are represented by artwork from this very issue. Including the big blue rocketship.

I recall seeing a boy of about 8 or so, flipping through it and remarking to his Dad "See, that's where Superman comes from and thats his Mom and Dad! Isn't it cool?!"
