Interesting article about a new orchestral piece by Michigan composer about Superman.

Each movement of the "Metropolis Symphony" has a title telling audiences where to direct their minds' eyes -- starting with "Lex," which casts a hard-charging solo violin as the nefarious tycoon, and culminating in "Red Cape Tango," a dance of death between Superman and his final nemesis, Doomsday. Daugherty's music, with its bold lines and intense colors, is as vividly drawn as the original comic books.

Daugherty didn't set out to write a 40-minute symphony, he recalled. He began with what now are the two shortest movements -- sketches of Mr. Mxyzptlk, the troublemaker from the fifth dimension, and Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane. Using pop culture as the springboard for orchestral music was hardly validated by the musical establishment

The Metropolis Symphony is a lot of fun, but I don't know how "new" it is.  I bought my copy a few years ago.

I guess the most interesting part of the article then is the news that the symphony is getting another performance.
