I am a big smallville fan and I would like to get and read some comics or anything that has some history of events from superman/clark kent's earlier days. I would like to read his development as portrayed in the comics. What collection or issues would anyone recommend. Any type of literature that one would recommend would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Although he doesn't wear the Superboy costume in the show, Smallville is very much based off of Superboy comics.

The caves near his house, Lex being in Smallville, the police chief, Pete Ross, and Lana Lang (Chloe Sullivan is a prototype of Silver-Age Pete Ross as well) were all prominent parts of the Superboy comics.

There are very, very many comics on this site, which you can read by clicking the "Superman comics" icon in the top-left corner of your screen. For the origins of Superman and Lex Luthor, I would recommend reading Elliot Maggin's stories "Last Son of Krypton" and "Luthor's Gift," which are also on this site.

Smallville is partially based from "Superman for All Seasons" by Jeph Loeb. You can buy this in graphic novel format at a bookstore.

Not so much "accurate," because it tells four stories from Clark's childhood that could have happened at any time...so you can read it without ever having read any other Superman story in your life. But Superman for All Seasons is really good, though the Rockwellian artwork might take some getting used to...
