Wherefore are thou, Smallville Section?

Admittedly, I have not kept up with this forum
as much as I should have, but it seems to be
missing the "Smallville" section.

Have searched for answers, but can find none.
Last I looked it was a popular part of this program.

Please enlighten this woeful werewolf.

I removed it back at the beginning of November.  When people asked why, this is the explanation they got:

Quote from: "Great Rao"
This overall forum - this website - is about Superman.

What is Superman?  He is many things.  He is truth, he is morality, he is a role model, he is strength and stability.  He is hope, and he is about improving the future, about being a role model.  A source of inspiration.  He is friendship, tolerance, and understanding.  Moral righteousness.

Superman Through the Ages! tries to promote these things, to promote Superman, to tell people what he is.  What he can be.   To be a beacon of truth.

In addition to being a fan of Superman, I am also a fan of the original "Battlestar Galactica" television series from the 1970s.  A few months ago, the administrators of one of the Galactica forums that I frequent sent out the following announcement.  I especially draw your attention to Malkyte's thoughts in the 6th and 7th paragraphs, which I have bolded.

Quote from: "Colonial Fleets"
“Give it a chance.”

That was the oft –repeated mantra of the folks on the old Sci-Fi board. Give the new show a chance, don’t pre-judge it; watch it, see what you think. So we did. We watched it and in the spirit of fairness, we matched words with deeds, here at Colonial Fleets, and created a completely separate but equal sub-forum, strictly for new show conversation. It seemed to be the right choice, at the time.

Since then, we have been educated to the mindset of the author that the offerings on this show, called Battlestar Galactica (2003), were to be a reflection of society and we were challenged to “think about it”; that there would be parallels to real-life events such as the Sept 11 attacks and told, by the author, to “make your own judgments as to what they say to you”; and that this new show would completely “re-invent” the sci-fi genre.

Well, we have thought about it and have spoken those thoughts on these forum pages, for much of the past 2 years. Ever since the new series came about, this fanbase has been in a tenuous place and Colonial Fleets was often a tension spring within the fanbase for allowing and even promoting, at times, discussion of the new series. Through that time, we made a concerted effort to separate the comments from the commentator and to keep the debates focused on the issue. Primarily, though, each of us has strived to employ our own personal standards of morality and decency when presenting these thoughts.

An example of these standards of decency and morality can be witnessed by the following remarks by our good friend, Malkyte, who very eloquently expressed the thoughts of many members, here and elsewhere:

“Throughout the many years of human existence, there has always been a line. A line that represented on one side, the best of human decency and morality, and on the other, the pure animalistic and monstrous evil that humans can be. This line has moved back and forth throughout those same years, and depending on individual experiences, it has always been in different places.”

“Society in general has appeared to become more tolerant of rude and disrespectful behavior, to the point where it is celebrated when someone is deviant or rebellious. It’s rather disheartening and disturbing at the same time. But our society more and more rewards liars, killers and celebrity deviants, who in some cases are only in the news because of the crap they do, and not for any talent they may possess.”

We share those same concerns about society and can see, for ourselves, the truth in the remarks. In addition, we agree that the “line” has been shifting back and forth with a decided tilt toward the less than desirable aspect of human society. We also realize that the entertainment industry has “pushed the envelope as far as they could”, only because we have allowed them to do so.

We have allowed the entertainment industry to tell us that it was "ok" to have a baby's neck snapped (the script originally called for Number Six to drive her finger through the baby's skull); it was "ok" to draw a parallel of sympathy toward the terrorists who carried out the Sept 11 attacks - in other words, we got what we deserved; but, the straw that snapped the proverbial camel's back was the use of rape as a military torture tool in the "Pegasus" episode.

We will NOT allow the entertainment industry to tell us that it is "ok", at any time, for a rape to occur. It does not "advance the story", it glorifies a horrible aggression upon another human being.

After nearly 2 years of this “educational experience”, we have reached the conclusion that the movement of the line must cease. While we absolutely hold no ill will toward our Fleets family members who are attracted to the show, we can no longer willingly sanction discussion about a show which goes against so many of our innermost values.

Mr. Moore, your show has had many events which have driven us away from its potential enjoyment. The negatives have far outweighed the positives, and in this case, the negatives have finally come to a head that cannot be ignored.

Effective with the posting of this announcement, the “New Battlestar Galactica Forum” as well as all of its related sub-forums will be permanently closed and removed from the Forum Index Page.

As mentioned above, the decision to close the "New Battlestar Galactica Forum", etal, is done with no malice toward any of our members attracted to the new show.

We value the contributions of all members of the Fleets family and will continue our journey as a Battlestar Galactica artists' site as well as a discussion forum centered on the Original Battlestar Galactica and, of course, the "fun" areas in the Rejuvenation Center. The Original Battlestar Galactica is the show whose revival this site was built to support and that is what this site will continue to focus on and support wholeheartedly. The "New Battlestar Galactica" series has shown it's true colors and it is time for us to bid it adieu.

The decision to close the "New Battlestar Galactica Forum", et. al., is based entirely on the content of the show and is FINAL and IRREVOKABLE.

Although the details are different regarding Smallville, the same sentiment applies.   I don't feel the need to list all the particular events in Smallville that made me reach this decision, but the cumulative effect has driven me to the same conclusion.

Recently hearing that Lois Lane went undercover as a stripper, that Clark Kent actually went and hung out at a strip-tease bar nursing an alcoholic drink; and reading what Steve Younis wrote in one of his recent "Big Blue Reports" were factors as well:

Quote from: "Steve Younis"
THE BIG BLUE REPORT

Welcome to the 106th edition of the Big Blue Report!

Disclaimer: This column talks about sex. If you're offended by this don't blame me, blame the creators of "Smallville". They're the ones who have made it a topic that needs to be discussed in a Superman newsletter.

I'll also preface this article by saying that while I haven't yet seen the episodes in question (being in Australia where "Smallville" no longer airs), I have read the Episode Summaries and Reviews published on the Superman Homepage, and therefore know where I'm coming from in regards to this matter.

Let me begin by asking two questions:

Q: What political party does Clark Kent vote for?
Q: What specific religious denominational beliefs does Clark Kent subscribe to?

The answer to both those questions is: "We don't know". In no medium have these topics ever been fully explored, and the reasons are two-fold...

Superman is a role model, a moral compass who many people (fictional and real) look up to. Therefore, Superman cannot be seen to be holding one political or religious stand point because he may unduly influence people to take the same stance by doing so. By the same token he would be alienating anyone who holds political or religious views which differ from the stance he took. Superman after all is supposed to be the champion of all people, not discriminating against anyone.

In allowing a teenage Clark Kent to have sex with Lana Lang in the 5th season of the TV show "Smallville", the creators of the series have (in my opinion) stuffed up royally.

Not only have they used the character to inadvertently tell their teenage viewers that it's okay for them to sneak around and have sex (because, after all, if young Superman can do it, then it must be the right and proper thing to do), but they've also alienated and ostracized any and all viewers who don't believe in sex before marriage or don't agree with teenage sex.

Now don't get me wrong. I am NOT saying that if you DO believe in sex before marriage that you are a bad person. ALL I'm saying is that using the character of Clark Kent/Superman to promote something that many people don't agree with is wrong. He is (as I've said) a role model to many generations.

My personal standing on this matter do indeed come from my religious beliefs, but even putting all that aside, let us look at this from a purely character perspective, because I know many people will be reading this thinking, "It's only a TV show!" So for those people who don't see the character as anything more than a fictional character in a make-believe world, let me examine this from a purely character-driven point of view...

Clark Kent had sex with Lana when he lost his powers in the episode "Mortal". However, being mortal or powerless didn't change the fact that Clark is a "strange visitor from another planet". He's still an alien who was not born on Earth. He's still from Krypton.

So, let me ask another question:

Q: In a relationship which is more important? Honesty or Sex?

Most people I've asked tend to agree that Honesty is more important than Sex. (A very small minority suggested that both were equally important.) I doubt anyone with common sense would say Sex was more important than Honesty in a relationship.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Clark and Lana agree that they'd be completely honest with each other in the first episode of Season 5?

So, with this in mind, did Clark tell Lana he's an alien from another planet before he had sex with her?

Answer: No.

Therefore, even though most people agree that "honesty" is more important than "sex" in a relationship (or as important). "Smallville" will have us believe that Clark Kent puts sex before honesty.

They might as well change the slogan to "Sex, Justice and the American Way", because "Truth" isn't as important as "Sex" in the world of "Smallville".

Regards,
Steve Younis

Steve raises an excellent point about honesty.  There are countless other examples of moral betrayal, lies, anger, refusal to understand or listen, etc. - just go browse the other threads in this very Smallville forum to see a few more of them.

I don't see any way in which this show has anything to do with Superman, but I see many ways in which it is antithetical to everything he is.

To paraphrase Elliot S! Maggin: A good Superman story is a story that uplifts the reader (or in this case, the viewer).  Smallville does the opposite and this site will no longer be party to it.
