So I have this oversized comic from 1982 (copywrite 1981) titled "Superman Spectacular."  I had it on my list for quite a while as to a comic I needed to complete my collection of Superman comics issued that year, but now that I have it I am wondering if it is just a reprint of an earlier story.  It's the saga of superman red/blue.  Is this a reprint? If so, of what issue?

Thanks!

Haven't opened it yet - it arrived damaged - no backing board, no protective cardboard, no bubble envelope...just slung into a priority-mail-type envelope. Argh.  However, since it is oversized, I'd have to scan the pages and print them out to scale with regular comics (I bind them into hardcovers). If its a rerun I won't go through the trouble...

I'll go through it tonight.  I had thought the superman red/blue stories were much earlier (and classic), so perhaps this is one of them (haven't quite read the earlier issues yet...)

Yeah the original story is 1963 in age...strange that it would be reprinted that much later, unfortunately, the GCD has no indexing of that one off issue...so its hard to tell what type of a comic it was meant to be.

I assume you do know the original Superman Red/Blue story is on this site, right?

Just compared a few pages, and its definately not the original story....even came across superman saying "that tingling sensation - I haven't felt it in years" before he splits in two.  So its definately a sequel.  Just wonder if its original...

In 1981, in response to their German audience's insatiable demand for Superman stories, DC agreed to prepare a series of extra-length episodes exclusively for their German licensee. A portion of the first issue's print-run was published in English and the 48-page album (with cardboard covers, a square spine and measuring 8.5 x 11.5 inches) appeared in U.S. comics shops as SUPERMAN SPECTACULAR # 1. "The Startling Saga of Superman-Red and Superman-Blue" took its title from the classic Silver Age imaginary tale but Bob Rozakis' plot took off in an entirely different direction. Paul Kupperberg provided dialogue and Adrian Gonzales and Vince Colletta were the artists.
