Here's a simple timeline I just put together, illustrating how Superman Returns fits in with the other movies.

If only Superman had gone to Krypton to investigate the possibility of more Phantom Zoners (were there more triangles floating around?) THAT would've made a lot more sense than where your daddy after Jor-El plainly told him back in 78 that he had been dead for thousands of years!!!

BTW think JOR is an amalgam of JOe and JeR?

hummm... I still don't know if Superman 2 actually fits in, remember what Ma Kent told him about the universe being a big place and there might be more like him, clearly she totally missed the fight between Superman and the three Phantom Zoners.

There was mention of Lex having been in the Fortress before, and that happened in II.  But you're right, it wasn't 100% clear.

Also remember that the Superman II bedroom scene in the Fortress could very well have been where Jason was conceived.  I assumed that Bryan Singer was making intentional reference to it.

I think it may be more like this:

Richard Donner Superman Footage-->Timeline Split=>Rest of S II, III, IV-->Superman Returns

Bryan Singer has talked about how much he admires Donner's work. It may very well be that the Donner cut of Superman II is the direct prequel to Superman Returns. That way, Lois still did the nasty in the fortress, but Clark never revealed his identity to her, or promised that he would never leave Earth. Or used the memory-erasing super-kiss.

That makes a lot of sense and you could very well be right.  I'll have to change the timeline once the cover art for the Donner-cut is released.

But making a sequel to a movie that no one has ever seen before is a pretty odd move.
