Interesting...I think they definitely had the leg up on DC, who at the time dealt with the atomic bomb as something Luthor could make into a grenade-sized weapon and toss at Superman ("Battle of the Atoms")...

I suppose that story was a shock for the children in 1946. There is something scary in those pages, seeing Captain Marvel unable to solve things while the world is destroied.
A great tale, really.
