I wonder if the fact it was a bit of irreverent humor might've also made the Bizarro stories popular at the time, at a time when such humor mostly seemed to be frowned upon (judging from the TV shows, movies, etc. at the time). Perhaps someone thought the Bizarros might attract the same kids that liked "Mad" magazine's type of humor?
