There's a marked difference in performance today. For the better, I mean!

It is too bad to lose some old threads, since the discussions here are usually pretty educational and free from a lot of junk that hits lots of internet forums...

Any chance the pruned threads could one day be archived for read-only like the old DC message board threads?

I did backup the database before pruning it, so in theory those old posts might be recoverable someday.

Performance was still pretty bad, so I installed a new forum package to see if that would help out any.  The old forum was phpBB, the new one is SMF.  This one has some spiffy new features like a calendar and "user karma"; plus moderators can now merge topics in addition to splitting them.

I'm still trying to figure out permisssions and all that though.  In theory, users should now be able to post.  If not, someone please drop me an email...

Well, as usual with new software, it looks a little unusual but it seems to be working OK for me on login.

Actually, I use a lot of phpBB forums, this one seemed to be getting wonky for awhile, double posts, not always noting the last post to a thread etc.  Hope this works out better.

Its also fairly impressive that a lot of preferences and icons followed over to the new software without going south...the look is a little blue-ish but I figure if you decide to stay with this software, it'll be adjusted a little.

This will get some getting use to, but I am glad to see the old PHP form go. Too many problems with that one.

Strangely, when I went back to the main page, even after you posted, I appeared as the last poster to this thread...ah, I don't know, might as well see how this all settles out....

This is a strange new world!

Still some kinks and disorientation but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventuially.

Too bad about those old threads --many posters who are not around from even the time I found this forum were still a great source of wisdom that I dipped into off and on (more off, admittedly).

I will never use even half of the new options for posting.
