Since it is all being done by one insane person, I keep banning the names but they keep creating new ones. Is there anyway to ban an IP address?

Perhaps we should have a page clarifying our unique take on Earth-1 and Earth 2.  I'm sure that it's understood by longtime Supermanica contributors who are also familiar with "The Great Superman Book," but to the new contributor, it might be confusing.

In fact, I'm not so certain I understand it myself.

I kind of think a page on the rules, philosophy, and methods for adding entries would be good too.  I don't think its intuitive to outside people.

Sure seems like this person is just being stubborn though...sometimes Wikis can drive you nuts.

stubborn is putting it lightly, what is this the 5th id? I got better things to do than to rollback entries.

The rules are not something I came up with on my own, but something we all decided. All the threads are still here if anyone wants to read them.

But to review, here is a FAQ if you will:

Who is the Golden Age Superman?

He is the Earth-1 Superman from 1938 to 1955.

Is he different from the Silver Age (1956-1970) or the Bronze Age (1971-1986) Superman?

No they are all the same person and all of their stories take place on Earth-1 as stated in the Comics and in TGSB

What is Earth-2?

Earth-2 was first encountered by the Flash in The Flash No. 123, Sep 1961: "Flash of Two Worlds!". It is a Parallel World. It is based on the comics of the Golden Age.

So does that mean that all the Golden Age comics happen on Earth-2?

No, it is only based on the Golden Age, it is not the actual Golden Age. Many of the real life Golden Age Superman stories and facts are contradicted in many Earth-2 Stories. For example, Lex Luthor lost his hair pretty early on during the Golden Age but he never did on Earth-2. The Daily Planet appears on 1940 until 1986. But on Earth-2, it doesn't exist, but rather in its place the Daily Star. His name was Kal-El, but on Earth-2 his name is Kal-L There are many more examples.

So the Earth-2 Superman is not the same person as the Golden Age Superman?

No, the real Golden Age happen during the years 1938 to 1955. The Earth-2 Superman doesn't appear in any comic book until 1977, in our Bronze Age!

But, what about this Earth-1 you keep referring to, that didn't appear until the Silver Age!

No, this is wrong. Only the name didn't appear until this time, but the world itself existed since 1938 (in our world). It doesn't make sense to call something Earth-1 if there are not other Earths to compare it too.

Ok, but how can I tell if something took place on Earth-2 or not?

ALL Earth-2 stories always label themselves as Earth-2 stories, so you are in luck, if the story doesn't claim to take place on Earth-2, then it doesn't take place on Earth-2. Pretty easy huh?

But, wait a second, sometimes DC referred to the Earth-2 Superman as the Golden Age Superman! I mean, LOOK at this monkey boy! In ya face sucker!!! http://superman.nu/tales2/e2-origin/

Is that comics listed here: http://superman.nu/wiki/index.php/Canonical_sources ?

Yeah, I didn't think so, nice try though.

Once again, TGSB just like DC Comics treats the Golden, Silver and Bronze Age Superman as the same person and thus so do we.

My point is that there is a difference between malicious vandalism (ie, intentional defacement); spam (an advert for something); and someone who has good intentions and wants to help but doesn't understand, or even know of, the guidelines.

I think that in the first two cases, blocking is the preferred response.  But the third case is not "spam" nor "vandelism."  I think a more constructive response is to offer an explanation along with some clarification and guidance before resorting to blocking.

I do not know which applies to this particular instance because I haven't been following it - and I offer my apologies to you if you've been in communication with this person and have explained our guidelines. But I think that either way, it has served to instruct us of at least one fault on Supermanica: The missing explanation that our use of Earth-1 and Earth-2 is not the same as another widely held usage.  This can easily cause misunderstandings and lead to people continually editing pages back and forth and getting nowhere except more frustrated.  Yes, the threads are here, but we can not expect everyone who contributes to Supermanica to come read every post on this forum first.  We need clear instructions on Supermanica itself in order to prevent the problem from recurring, and a little more discussion on the wiki discussion pages might also help.

The threads do have a lot of good discussion and clarification, sometimes what's bothered me the most is that people don't join this site and come to the Supermanica threads...there have been times I wished it was a requirement, it just doesn't happen as much as I wish.

I think that's why we need to use the discussion pages over there more often, maybe refer people to threads over here when appropriate.  Unless anyone has any other ideas?

Beppo, to address your original question about IP blocking:  Supermanica is configured to require that people create user accounts in order to create or edit articles.  Since additions/modifications by IP address are turned off, the IP address blocking functionality is also turned off.  Unfortunately this is a limitation of the wikimedia software.

But I have looked in the database and discovered that these Earth-1/Earth-2 edits do not seem to have been done by one person - the different accounts have different email addresses and the edits were made from different sets of IPs.

This leads me back to my points that I think some of these edits may have been due to well-intentioned misunderstandings, not due to ill will; and that it seems to be a common problem.

It never ends really. I can't believe it is not the same spammer, perhaps there is a message board out there sending people to mess up our project?
