Well, many academic journals and most scientific journals cite references in parentheses in the body of the article (though usually in those cases, author(s) and year). Footnotes are used in "Nature" and "Science" short articles.

Of course a big reason also is that I've spent a while adding a few hundred new entries and editing references on many more and going back and re-formatting would be a lot of work, especially since only about 4 or 5 people work on Supermanica in the long term.
