He was Jor-El's lab monkey. He was super-baby's super-pet.

Super-monkey normally just had small cameo appearances in most stories other than the 1st one.

The only good stories he appeared in was as part of the Legion of Super-Pets, IMHO.

Since Superman doesn't seem to have a problem believing King Krypton is a gorilla, it at least seems like there was a variety of primates around. Though it seems like the comics never really had a problem mixing up monkeys and apes.

Krypto was part of the established story line. Beppo was presumably introduced solely as an idea that never really took off?

yes and no, he was introduced later in the 1950's, he seem more popular as the Legion of Superpets member than anything. Mostly he was involved as a type of deus ex machina in any killer ape and mad monkey on the loose story Wink

To answer the question in the thread title...

In a SUPERMAN FAMILY from the early 1970s that had a pull-out section about the Super-Pets, they explained that Beppo's "final fate" was to live in the jungle as the king of beasts. There's something vaguely poetic about that.
